Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November 13, 1996 - Page 8 Buckaroos give Trojans a scare before falling in state semifinal, The Monticello Buckaroos put a scare in the Morgan Trojans before falling in the State 2A semifinal football contest, held November 9 at Springville 27-2- 0 High School. The Buckaroos started out strong and played a tremendous game, but were eventually overpowered by the larger Morgan squad. Monticello left no doubts that they belonged in the upper echelons of the 2A ranks this season as they put up a tremendous fight to the top ranked and undefeated team from Morgan After a first half which dominated was by Monticello, a series of second half miscues turned the tide in Morgans favor and signalled the defeat of the Buckaroos. Monticello scored first in the game, culminating a scoring drive with a seven-yartouchdown run by Buckaroo tailback Cody The Buckaroo Deeter. touchdown drive was highlighted by a 10 yard run by Shane Butler and two receptions by Travis Scherick. With 9:02 remaining in the half, Buckaroo tailback Shane Butler punched it in from the one yard line. The touchdown was set up on a pass from quarterback Jared Crane to Christian Redd. An interference call on Morgan gave the Buckaroos first and goal from the three, setting up Butlers touchdown. The Monticello offense ran out of gas at halftime against the much larger and deep Morgan squad. 7-- 6 6 33-yar- d The Buckaroos amassed less than 50 yards of total offense in the second half, while Morgan was able to take advantage of Buckaroo turnovers, tie the score, and go on to the win. Morgan closed the Buckaroo lead in the third quarter after intercepting a Monticello pass at giving them good field posimid-fiel- tion. Starting at their own 33 yard line, the Trojans lost three yards, faced fourth and 13 and punted the ball away. However, they were able to recover a fumble on the punt, giving them the ball on the Monticello 41 yard line. The Buckaroo defense tightened again, pushing Morgan backwards until they faced a fourth and 13 and were forced to punt. However, a second Buckathe punt gave the Trojans new life with a first down at the Buckaroo line. Once again, the Buckaroo had marching the defense Morgan opposite direction. In three downs they lost one yard, and faced fourth and goal from the six. The conversion tied 67-yar- two-poi- touchdown was on a five yard pass. The Buckaroo defensive effort was led by Doug Garner, who had 11 tackles. Other defensive standouts for the Bucks included Cody Deeter, Cole Young, Corey Schafer, Tyler Wareham, Justin Redd, Jared Dowell, and Chris- Kevin Hansen, tian Redd.
