Show iTH about nothing much at all. On the subject of confrontations, I would have enjoyed a ring side seat at one Jay Doris Valle Mueller told about. Grandpa (John Wilson) has always wanted a mule, so Mama got him one for Christmas. Names Molly. Clint (Howell) and Dad were standin around out there and Clint decided hed find out if Molly could be rode. It was cold and Molly didnt want to be bothered right then. She was stompin Clint up pretty good until Dad asked, Why dont you just turn loose of her? So he did and Molly went off and left him alone. I must go down and meet Molly. Seems shes a lady that knows her own mind. Sometimes I think I may one day come to terms with this modem world of technology after all. This word processor and I have had many major confrontations during the past five years and I have rarely won one. But Donna and Cheri both spent some time subduing the Beast and coaching me during their Christmas visit. So yesterday when the printer ribbon died at the beginning of several pages, I did not sit sadly watching all that blank paper chugging through the rollers until the printer reached the end of its appointed task. I hit Escape and when the thing paused saying, Press Y if you want to continue, I calmly pressed N, changed my ribbon, informed the system that I was ready to print again and did so. I was so excited with my great victory that I spent the rest of the day recording a lot of words me Jay also said that Billy T. from Grand Junction has joined the Muellers band as lead guitar. And ex-jock- ey Jerry Vinson, formerly of Greeley, is now living at the old Lees Ranch, taking care of the horses, and getting ready for cookouts et al during the tourist season. It was a balloon piloted by Fred Peterson with Tom Kreuser and Bill Peterson (no relation to Fred) as aides. Theyre all from Phoenix. The wind started going the wrong direction, Kreuser said. But we had a good flight. In fact any flight we can walk away from is a good one. Sounds dangerous to me. Worse than trying to ride a recalcitrant mule. Even worse than sloshing through the snow and ice across Butler Wash and up into the canyons looking for Monarch Cave which was the way I amused myself on the last day of the year. Utah State Historical Associations Gary Topping was in town with a mission. Find Monarch Cave. He was armed with various books and papers. Castleman didnt even know what the 1892 meant, he announced smugly. Castleman is the Salt Lake City doctor who has explored Southeastern Utah extensively and written about his adventures. I just tried to find his book. I must have it somewhere. But in looking for it I got so involved with several other books Ive been meaning to read that I had to abandon the mission. I think Ill give up all extraneous until activity Spring comes and concentrate A little mind on reading. improvement might be in line just before I lose it (my mind, that is) when the tourists come again. Topping had a copy of an 1892 issue of the Illustrated American magazine in which Louis Gunckel described his adventures in Comb Ridge. Gunckel wrote of an immense cave 9 miles north of the Rio San Juan in which he found extensive Anasazi ruins. He scratched the words Monarch Cave and the date 1892 on the wall. Unfortunately there was 3AN jyM a sketch with the story and, according to Topping, all we had to do was find a certain land conformation matching the sketch and then we would walk right to Monarch Cave. Well. Theres this problem in searching for a particular peak or point or any particular juxtaposition of such landmarks. Where, specifically, was the guy standing when he drew that nice picture? Above or below or near or far or north or south or east or west or up or down? It is my personal opinion that every peak or point or canyon wall can from one vantage Joseph Frank, a resident and city employee of Lafayette, Louisiana, celebrated his birthday on January 6, 1989. By turning 26, Frank unknowingly established a milestone for an agency of the U. S. Government and earned himself a minor place in history. Eight years ago, Frank was man to sign the first up and be processed by the Selective Service System under the continuous draft registration program. From the day of his birthday on, however, if Congress and the president order a return to military conscription under present law, Frank is too old to be drafted. He became the first man since Vietnam to pass through the full period of draft eligibility without being drafted. With few exceptions, federal law requires every man to register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Men have a y window in which to comply with the law: for 30 days before to 30 days after turning 18. The process is simple. Included in that number were 33 felony and 40 drug arrests. Deputies traveled 142,347 patrol miles, during which they logged 2,021 citations; cleared 139 warrants; investigated 57 accidents; and served 575 criminal and civil papers. Deputies cleared 150 cases that included the return of property to various individuals. Returned items included a saddle, chain saws and a number of stolen vehicles. A number of the cases cleared came as the direct result of help from San Juan County residents. The sheriff and deputies greatly appreciate this help and encourages others to get involved when they are aware of criminal activity. The sheriffs office will continue to have traffic checkpoints throughout the county in the coming year. These checkpoints, like those in the past, will be held at various locations and times. The sheriff thanks county residents in advance for their support in this area. County residents and persons working in San Juan County should be aware that law enforcement will continue to watch for improper registrations on motor vehicles. Please keep your registration current and register any vehicles that need to be registered. Public Notice Advertising Protects Your Right To Know |
