Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 13, 1988 - Page 16 Doris Valle Last week there was considerable excitement in the vicinity of the DNA office across the river in Halchita, with sirens and police cars and uniforms galore in attendance at an unexplained incident. Rumors flew, as they have a tendency to do in our area. The stories ranged from: two briefcases full of $50s and $100s and guns found near the road east of the dump, the arrest at last of the suspects in the Stanley-Bega- y murders, or Royalty rates Effective April 1, the royalty rate on new state oil, gas and hydrocarbon leases is 12.5 percent. Prior to April 1, new leases were issued at a 16 23 percent rate. The new rate is the same as the prevailing federal rate outside of known producing areas.. Park visitors Visitors to Canyonlands National Park increased 24 percent during March 1988 (11,582) when compared with March 1987 (9,310). Overnight stays at the park were up 43 percent when compared to last year. The 4,467 visitors at Natural Bridges National Monument in March is a 47 percent increase over the 3,034 visitors during March of 1987. Overnight stays at the monument were up 47 percent when compared with last year. simple domestic disharmony. However, Sgt. Rudy Cook, of the San Juan County Sheriffs office, said, It was all a . . Wait a minute. I cant quote Rudy. Family newspaper. Ill quote Shakespeare: it was all much ado about nothing. A Highway 163 motorcycle accident near Comb Ridge put Wesley Howard, age 24, in a Gallup hospital with a broken collar bone and compound fracture of his left arm. Wesley is the son of A1 and Helen Howard of Halchita. The subject of accidents reminds me of a former local resident Olson Jake, in town this weekend from Prewitt, New Mexico, where he is employed at Wingate High School. One night quite a few years ago, Jake was driving up the grade a mile south of Mexican Hat. He saw several people standing beside the highway and slowed wondering why they were there. Watching the people near the road, Jake did not see the girl who was lying across it in front of him. The girl had decided to leave this cruel world. She and her friends ahd been drinking. It did not occur to anyone to advise against her plan to wait in the highway for a unwary motorist to end her life. The girl didnt die but Jake was not happy about his involuntary involvement in her suicide attempt. Reva Lovingood Hopkins, from Montrose, Colorado, was here for a couple of days reminiscing about the old days when her father, George Lovingood, worked on Denny Viles uranium crew in the early 40s. The crew was based at Gouldings. Another ex Belknap crew member, R. J. Johnson, put on the river as Outward Bound, and miles to go before I sleep . . : . Carolyn Drollinger called me from Monument Valley and I had a letter from Ann Reeve, St. George. Mrs. Reeve left San Juan 48 years ago but she writes, It will always be a big part of me for I lived on Niklovis Ranch . . .eleventh of the fifteen children bom to A.R. and Nell purchasers of the late Be- lknaps outfitting business, pulled back into town. Most of the people on the Outward Bound trip werent talking much, but Loie Evans said, We had a good time. The little kids didnt fuss about the weather and nobody got sick. But most of the time we rowed straight into that wind. A big gust and Id lose ground and start backing upstream to Mexican Hat. And you know how you always wash off in the river. This time it was so cold we never took our clothes off the whole time. I was pleased that my readers came to my rescue and identified the bit of poetry that kept running through my mind: For I have promises to keep - Lyman . . . According to Mrs. Drollinger and Mrs. Reeve the lines are from a Robert Frost poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening . Frost is in my Anthology of American Poetry but not that particular work so I must resort to the public library, read the thing in its entirety and forget it. While I was looking for Frost, I found several other old friends and spent a pleasant couple of hours with them. No wonder I wake up every morning feeling that the world has been turning too fast leaving me scurrying along behind with hundreds of things to do and miles to go before I sleep. . . I remember an old friend who used to say, Every day plan more than you could possible do in that day and youll get a lot done. I believe in that system. I start my daily assignments in overdrive. Unfortunately I get distracted. Its a beautiful day and I slip away just for a short hike but I keep wanting to see whats around the next comer. Or I open a book for a brief break and keep turning the pages to see what happened So much for good next. intentions.
