Rowley, who is retiring this year from public education, taught mathematics, science, and computer programming at Monticello High School for 34 years. He also taught classes at College of Eastern Utah, Brigham Young University and Weber State College. He is a member of local, state and national education associations and of the Utah and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He received the Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathe- matics Teaching in 1985; a Shell Merit Fellowship at Stanford University in 1964; and, a Mathematics Educator Award from Brigham Young University in 1980. In addition to his professional career, Rowley has participated in many civic and service activities. He was and instructor of the Blue co-found- er Mountain Doyle Benson Rowley Honorary degree to Monticello Teacher The Utah State Board of Regents conferred the degree of Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters upon Doyle Benson Rowley during the June 3 commencement exercises at College of Eastern Utah San Juan Center in Blanding. The honorary degree was awarded in recognition of Rowleys outstanding contribution and dedication to quality education and his contributions to the college and his community. As part of his response to the presentation, Rowley stated that he represents countless other educators who are equally deserving of the honor. His educational philosophy includes the conviction that success in teaching comes if one keeps trying and doesnt give up the students must see that the teacher is totally committed and refuses to be sidetracked. Rowley was born and raised in Parowan, Utah. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He attended the Branch Agriculture College of Utah in Cedar City for two years and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1952. He completed a masters degree program at the University of Utah in 1965. He supplemented his college education with graduate work at Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Wisconsin, Utah State Environmental School in the early 70s.
