As our baby population explodes, a valued member of our community leaves. Alice Denny, public health nurse here for 12 years, has moved with her family to Las Vegas. Would you believe we still have river runners? Eileen Caryl and Pete Hester led an Arizona group who reported a wonderful trip. True, the two who fell in the river during the football catch action between rafts had to be dried off fast but with plenty of extra clothes nobody worried about a dunking. A lonely white swan rode with the party for a while and had to be coaxed to depart on his solitary way. Most recent interesting town in were professionguests al photographer Manfred and his crew, including Production Director Geoff Juckes of Hollywood. Manfred is from Germany and is among the top names in photography in Europe. When Manfred is due, mart brings Christmas cheer to needy children K Over 2,000 K mart stores nationwide opened their doors early on December 13 to bring Christmas cheer to more than 42,000 underpriviledged children. This is the second Christ- mas shopping spree sponsored by K marts Good News Com- mittees, groups of employee volunteers. At 8 a.m., needy children took to the aisles of K mart stores across the country and spent over $840,000 on gifts for their families, friends and them- the phone starts ringing about a week prior to the big event and never stops. Misch calls from Los Angeles reporting weather too bad for the plane to fly bringing the models, and Robert reports the motor home and truck are en route but one of the vans has disappeared ... I take messages on top of messages. But I like Manfred because he is wildly enthusiastic about our beautiful red rock country. When he is photographing, he has aids on all sides handing him things while he shoots roll after roll of film, chanting to himself. Lovely! Lovely! an enchanting display of color against the sky. One evening the sunset was subdued, pale coral and tangerine against a delicately turquoise sky. And another day small islands of flame floated below a dark blue mass lined with hot pink. That night dusk fell swiftly and I drove on, watching a thin silver of silvery moon festooned with a wisp of gray cloud. Then a dark shadow at the side of the highway solidified, grew legs, and ambled out in front of me. Theres the view heading north above the drop into Comb Wash: layers of subtle shades of rust and sand in rounded mounds topped by Comb Ridge with Blue Mountain in the distance, lightly frosted with snowy white, in drifts of pale blue and white clouds shadowed and brightened as the sun comes and goes. And going south between Blanding and Bluff, theres a long stretch of high flat land where the sinking sun presents Bea- utiful! Lovely! I did get annoyed with him and his gang a few years ago when daughter Cynda, here on vacation, was doing chauffeur duty for them. As she drove along the highway in Monument Valley, the rider next to her said, Cynda, no matter what you see dont get excited. Just dont change speed. Keep your foot steady on the accelerator . . . And Cyn looked in her rear view window and saw the wheels of the biplane Manfred had been using for stunt shots. Professional photographers concentrate on Monument Valley but I often say, Lovely!
