Dear Editor: How long do the residents of Blanding have to put up with the senseless and destructive vandalism of our citys beautiful Christmas decorations: the theft of a new 100 foot exten- sion cord last weekend, wires tom from the sockets of light strings, and numerous broken and stolen light bulbs. This destruction is costly to myself and all members of our com- munity. The decorations were put in place for the enjoyment of entire community, not for the enjoyment of seeing what can be destroyed. Where is the pride? Where is the discipline to respect anothers property? The cooperation of Police Chief Tom Austin and his officers in this matter is to be 17, 1986 - Page 2 commended. They have caught and properly taken care of some of these vandals, but there is much yet to be done. Somewhere out there, is someone or something that gets a big thrill out of destroying public I did enjoy the twinkling lights last year in the Monti-cell- o park. Somehow that beautiful fairyland adds pleasure and excitement to the season, even helps one feel, a little more, the true spirit of the occasion. So I was delighted to learn that dedicated people in Blanding were putting forth the necessary effort to assure that Blanding, too, had more illumination. The night came when the lights would be turned on. At the little triangle park, one comes into town from the north, they flipped the switch and it was an exciting occasion, enhanced even more by two numbers from Sunshine Gen- - and private property. Maybe we need to organize an active Neighborhood Watch. All concerned residents would take it upon themselves to watch areas where decorations are displayed and report suspi- cious behavior to the authorities. Then maybe some of our less caring towns people could be caught in the act and delt with to the maximum that the law will allow. Perhaps too, the parents could be given a fine for the acts of vandalism that their children (who roam our streets with nothing to do, and no adult supervision) commit, Lets not allow a few uncaring persons to spoil some-th- e thing that was created for all of us to enjoy. Blanding, lets unite as a community and put a stop to this costly destruction. Although Empires preliminary 1987 projections indicate that 5 percent decrease cannot be passed on through the retail rates, they do indicate that due Clarifications The county commission has requested that the San Juan Record clarify three items of last weeks business. They are: 1. A comment on the Governors lack of knowledge of his staffs actions on wilderness should have specified BLM Wilderness Management Plan. 2. Bill Bayles, county communications specialist, will receive a salary increase after he completes his training course, not now. The county will require preon approval, not reservation road work. 3. pre-payme- to the wholesale power rate decrease a retail increase will probably not be necessary at this time. Empires rate consultant is preparing a cost of service study which will inform them of the effects of the 5 percent decrease in the cost of wholesale power and whether or not retail rate adjustments will be necessary. According to a Colorado Public Utilities Commission comparison for 500 KWH residential use, Empire ranks fourth from the lowest in rankings of the 14 cooperatives of Community Development, Department of Community and Economic Development. The awards were made on December 4. The Impact Board allocates funds which are generated by mineral lease royalties in Utah for the purpose of providing financial assistance to energy impacted communities. Colorado-Ute- Christmas loses much of joy When sticky fingers I employ. Oh, you, whove darkened pretty light, Why not come forth and make it right? This is the time to give, not take, Come to rectify that big mistake. Bring back the cords, the globes and such, Twould help the Christmas spirit much. Thats a good place to begin To bring you happiness within. A visitor in my home a few days ago told me of some of their family traditions. They keep Christmas, not as a time to receive a long list of gifts, but as a birthday celebration. The children receive one gift, but the emphasis is placed on him whose birth we celebrate. It isnt an I want, situation, but a time of What would he want me to do? No hassle, no selfishness, but a time of giving. A real Christmas. My friend said they do decorate a tree, and each child is allowed to buy one item to put on the tree. Each keeps his own decorations and is allowed to put them on the tree where he wants them. When it comes time for him to leave home he takes his own box of decorations with him, so when the time comes hes ready to decorate the tree and enjoy the season with those special things from home. Happy . Empire has not raised their retail rates since 1981 with the exception of a pass on rate increase when Colorado-Ut- e raised their wholesale power rate in 1982. ging a tunnel nearly 18 inches in diameter and seven miles long in ten hours. On to the library, where the San Juan High School band played to accompany the lighting. Another happy occasion. Surrounded by shining colors of beauty, the beautiful music was enjoyed, particularly by one little Sassy. The little three year old sat on the wall with her head cocked to one side, drinking in the rapture of the whole affair, and swinging her feet to the rhythm of the music. Wonderingly she turned to her mother and asked, I cant sing that with my mouth, huh? Just with my feet, huh? And whose feet dont sing with the rhythm of the music? The activities were moved to the South LDS chapel to hear the San Juan High School chorus. They could sing with their mouths and share beautiful music as more lights were turned on and enjoyed along with a lovely manger scene. It was a good occasion, pleasant to contemplate. The new city lights and the many decorated homes were an invitation to go again and again to delight in the beauty they displayed. The happiness did not last, however, for from both public and private displays, some misguided souls took it upon themselves to take some of those pretty lights, and some of the extension cords, either to use, or destroy.
