Buck says she works with disabled people of all ages. Most of the problems she encounters are related to physical and mental disabilities. In some cases, providing help is just a matter of finding transportation to a referred agency. Smith says a lack of facilities is one problem facing the United State Achievement Academy. Stephen, who attends San J uan High School, was nominated for the award by Robert Bowring, band director at the school. This prestigious award is given to less than ten percent of all american high school students. Among the criteria for selection of the award are a students academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, attitude and recommendation from a teacher or director. Stephen is the son of Kermit and Virginia Blake. His grandparents are Susan Lyman Butt of Blanding and Anna T. Jensen of Fairview, Utah. Program for disabled on reservation by Stan Byrd A new progran for locating and assisting developmental disabled people is underway on the Utah portion of the Navajo Reservation. Since October 1, when the program started, program coordinator Margaret Buck has received 57 referrals from agencies working with the handicapped. Of that number, 16 people have been contacted and referred to an appropriate agency for assistance. The program is funded by the Utah Council for the Developmental Disabled, a state agency. The Utah Navajo Development Todd Vo well, a former Blanding resident, has been named to the 1986 Utah Academic basketball team. Only 10 athletes were named to the All-Stat- Council was selected as the contract agency because of their close relationship and access to the reserva- tion area. UNDC works with existing agencies to locate reservation people that need handicapped services. The San Juan Social Services office in Blanding works closely with UNDC to reach Navajos. Sharon Smith, a social services specialist for the developmental disabled, is coordinating work with Buck. Smith says Bucks use of the Navajo languag and her personality go a long way in opening doors that were previously closed. Many cases are referred to the citys trees worth?
