Superintendent Lancaster of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has announced the release of amended Development Concept plans (DCP) for Bullfrog and Halls Crossing and a Statement for Management for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The Development Concept Plans describe the continued development and use of the marina developments on the shores of Lake Powell. Changes in goals, funding, and visitation patterns resulted in the need to update the DCPs. One noticeable change is the opening of the automobile ferry between Halls Crossing and Bullfrog. The DCP also includes a finding of no significant en- vironmental impact for the amended development concept plans. The Statement of Management for the recreation area outlines the laws, policies, regulations and agreement which guide the National Park Service in decisions regarding the management and use of the park. Edward Orgeron, captain of John Atlantic Burr ferry to lead to more injuries. Here are the conclusions from their records. It follows that a little prevention will help everyone. The addition of hilly terrain at Lake Powell. New Orleans sea captain at helm on ferry by Nanette Larsen seaman veteran When a answered Edmond Orgeron brief ad in the New Orleans Times Speakeon for a ferry boat captain out West, he had never heard of Lake Powell. Now, he Lake Powell pilots the ferry between Bullfrog and Halls Crossing twelve times daily . . . except on his days off when he and his wife do a little exploring on their own near Lake Powells 2,000 miles of rugged shoreline. 1 didnt know there was a lake down in this part of the country that could have a vessel this size. It was unbelievable to me until I saw it, says Orgeron, bom and raised on a sugarcane farm in Cut off, Louisiana, 60 miles south of New Orleans. Since the Lake Powell ferry began operating on July 3, thousands of passengers have been intrigued by Orgerons polite New Orleans accent or stories. At age 15, his he was a deckhand and by 18 had received his captains license. In his more than 30 years as a ship captain, Orgeron has overseen all types of vessels from supply carriers off the coast of Africa to river boats on the Mississippi. The Navajo sandstone cliff and rock scenery during the 20- 100-fo- sea-goin- ot g 195-fo- ot minute 3.1 mile jaunt between Halls Crossing and Bullfrog is considerably different from what Orgeron left in New Orleans. Yet, he seems to be fitting right into the Lake Powell lifestyle. As his 150 passengers load or unload each hour, he enjoys hobnobbing with the locals as well as visitors from all over the nation and the world. He is saving his passengers 130 road miles around part of Lake Powell, the lake second largest man-made in the nation. , A beautiful vessel is describes way Orgeron Lake Powell ferry, called John Atlantic Burr after the the the an early southern Utah cattleman who blazed the Burr Trail. Orgeron praises the maneuverability of the Lake Powell ferry. With no wheel or rudders, the craft is operated by a clutch-throttl- e combination. A spin propeller allows the ferry to be set in any direction. 360-degre- into the workout schedule increases the likelihood of injury. It seems that morning runners are most vulnerable. This may be because body temperature is higher in the early hours andor the fact that by afternoon the muscle tissue has already been loosened up by the days gentle stretches. Information on specific injuries showed that plantar fasciitis was the most common injury. This is manifest by tenderness under the front part of the heel. It is much more likely to occur in men than (5-to- -l ratio), but among it primarily strikes those 20 or more pounds above the average weight. Time appears to be a factor, since the majority of runners with this syndrome reported running fewer than 20 miles a week for more than five years. Stress fractures were found not only in the foot, but also in the ankle, lower leg, upper leg, and hip area. Many of the runners suffering stress fractures exhibited abnormal foot biomechanics. Finally, the cause of most injuries were placed into five categories: 1) bad running shoes; 2) bad running surface; 3) lack of flexibility; 4) biomechanical imbalance; 5) bad training methods (largely, too fast, too soon, too far). Elim- inate these five factors and you have an excellent chance of avoiding injury and prolonging your running career. Use a variety of aerobic activities and you will do even better. Good luck! Lower Lung Cancer Risk Smokers of filtered, low tar cigarettes have a lower lung cancer risk compared to smokers of nonfiltered, higher tar cigarettes, says the American Cancer Society. However, the lung cancer risk for both types of smokers is substantially higher than the risk for ALL BASKETBALL SHOES e Texan David Hendrix takes over the helm of the Lake Powell ferry, when Edmond Orgeron is not in command.
