Show Shadow pattern at 15 minutes to noon during winter solstice. Norma Lance views display. Making Friends with Ancient Indian Gods by Reed Lance I was hunting deer with two Hopi Indians on lands dotted with ruins of their ancestors. A magnificent buck appeared for an instant then disappeared into the rugged landscape. Since the sandy soil made tracking easy, I followed him to the far side of the mesa and down a natural break in the cliff. The trail led across a plazalike area with a rock crevice on one side. I felt a compulsion to walk through the crevice. As I stepped into the yard-wid- e crack, I was startled to see a rock writing deeply engraved in the wall. It was a circle cross symbol, unique rock writing for the four-foot-hig- h area. The symbol was weathered and obviously ancient. Further investigation produced a few pottery shards, probably seven to eight hundred years old. Several rock rubble piles indicated small structures at one time. My curious examination was cut short by the fading daylight and I turned back to find my hunting camp. Walking into the darkness I could hear my Hopi friends beating on a water can and singing chants to bring me in. Enchanted by the beautiful setting and the distant rhythm, I felt as if I had moved back in time eight hundred years. Little did I realize this flashback would be repeated in the near future. Led by the source of the rhythm I walked straight into camp. After learning about the Sun Calendar in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, I felt an urgency to check my site for a similar phenomenon. On the wall opposite the most prominent symbol, I saw a shadow move up to touch a large circle of concentric rings. As the shadow moved to the far side, a second shadow moved up and touched the first side, bracketing the circle with shadows exactly at noon. Here was evidence I had found an ancient astronomical device. It had been performing its annual series of signals unseen for hundreds of years. Now, it was witnessed again by human eyes. However, to see the rest of the show, I had to wait for the other pivotal times of the year. The autumnal equinox, found me, camera in hand, waiting for a double performance. At mid morning, a point of light drifted across the center of an eye symbol. At the same time a second shadow formed a silhouette of a mans head as it crossed center of a series of concentric circles. The phenomenon were about forty feet apart, and I ran back and forth taking pictures. Since the only nonfunctional writing in the area was a human-lizarlike figure, I was very surprised when a lizard walked straight toward me. Out of fear, I stomped my foot. Four feet from me it stopped. There it remained while I moved back and forth. The lizard positioned itself at the silhouette, and I had the feeling it was telling me this signal was intended for the autmnal equinox, while the THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday June 5, 1985 - Page 15 After finishing I gathered my I had made contact with camera gear and retreated. messengers from ancient InI was intrigued by the lizards dian Gods.
