Federal and state wildlife biologists plan to take action this fall that will lead to captive breeding and raising of blackfooted ferrets Horseshoe pitch draws 30 entrants believed to be North Americas rarest animal. The planned program is contingent upon whether the nations only known colony of the ferrets, in Wyoming, continues to produce an annual population apparently surplus to the colonys need. Initial plans call for capturing six to ten animals from a population that ranged last year to well over 100. Biologists hope to ensure survival of the species, and eventually to produce enough animals to attempt establishment of other healthy colonies in Wyoming and elsewhere in the West. Ferrets taken this fall will be a nucleus for captive breeding. At a recent meeting, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the states of Wyoming, MonUtah tana, Colorado and to of a establishment agreed working group to guide recovery of the endangered ferret. The public is invited to attend these meetings to hear and comment on proposed hunting regulations recommended by the Interagency Committee and the 6 Open Mexico.
