Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday June 5, 1985 - Page 8 Names and faces in the news MHS students honored at award assembly Over $24,000 in scholarships and 284 Block M award winners were announced in an honors assembly Thursday at Monti-cellHigh. Block M awards are given to students for participation in extra curricular programs. Four memorial scholarships were presented, three in the name of students and one in o memory of a Monticello businessman. The Kyle Bailey award, presented by John Adair, went to Tava Hatch. The Athletic Alan Maughan Award, presented by Coach Dave Stoddard, went to Vess Hatch. Aaron Francom re- ceived the Randy Mosher Memorial Scholarship, presented by Amy Mosher. The Monticello Lions Club presented the Swede Odette Sterling Scholar Award to Gordon Walker and honored Walker and Kathern Barton with Outstanding Boy and Girl Citizen- ship and Personal Development awards. Stacy Young received the Don and Iris Barton Scholarship to Southern Utah State University, presented by Joyce Coleman. Coach Joe Davis presented the Athlete Scholar award to Blaine Fowler, quarfor terback Brigham Young was guest speaker University, back-u- p at commencement exercises for the Monticello High School Class of 1985 held in the high school auditorium May 30. Dr. Maughan stated it is not unusual for two or three students to achieve at this level, but 13 is exceptional. from Blanding, was awarded the Ragsdale Scholar-Athlete Recognized as 1985 representatives to Boys State and Girls State were David Musselman, Andrew Semadeni Lori Lewis aS Marysa Nebeker. Freedom Academy representatives award, an annual award honoring academic achievement for Eastern Oregon State College athletes. Jones, a secondary and math major ce are Scott Christensen, Bryan Odette and Michelle Slade. The ESA scholarship went to Lorenda Williams, presented by Liz Black. On behalf of the Monticello PTA, Joyce Coleman presented the school with a silver plaque on which the names of Sterling Scholars will be engraved. Included in the program were perfect attendance awards, numerous department awards for outstanding individual achievement, and introduction and swearing in of 1985-8studentbody officers. They are: Michelle Slade, president; Scott Christensen, vice president; Tava Hatch secretary; Samantha Slade, historian; and Alvaro Alba, activities chairman. 6 them. He concluded by admonishing the seniors to never look back on a failure or wish their life away, but to keep trying to succeed while enjoying the present. Preceeding Fowlers remarks, student addresses were given by Colleen Richardson and Gordon Walker, members of the graduating class. Final remarks were by Principal Dale Maughan after which he presented the Class of 1985. School Board Member Sunny Redd accepted the students for graduation. Diplomas were presented to the 45 members of the graduating class by Dr. Mel Walker of the San Juan School District. Principal commends high achievers Thirteen sixth grade students at Monticello Elementary School performed at the 99 Blake Jones, a sophomore Jeppson. 45 graduate in MHS commencement by Jody Bailey accounting and finance field. He received an associate degree in 1983 from the College of Eastern Utah, Price. Gordon Walker, recipient of the Elks Most Valuable Student Award, second place, awarded in Moab last week. Shelly Deeter received the Girls Athlete award from Coach Jo The high achievers are: Dan Allred, Kerri Chartrand, Tim Moore, Steven Dunow, Daniel Francom, Gertrude Hey den, Radna Proctor, Greg Randolph, David Rice, Curtis Rogers, Karen Stovall, Paul Walker, and Angie Suttlemyre. The mean grade equivalent for all Monticello Elementary sixth grades taking the CTBS test was 8.5, or the 74th percentile. Dyke LeFevre took over as District Four director for the Utah Department of Transportation on June 1, 1985. He has been with UDOT for 24 years. District Four is headquartered in Price and includes San Juan, Emery, Carbon and Grand counties. LeFevre has a degree in geology with additional studies in engineering. He is a registered professional engineer. Fourteen MHS students participated in State VICA at the Trade Technical College in Salt Lake City. At this convention, Monticello High School was given an official club charter. Contests were also held at the convention. Ralf Rosen placed third in industrial electronics, and Bub Hugentobler placed third in air cool gasoline engine repair. Three Monticello High Schoool students placed at the Young Craftsman Fair at Young Brigham University. Aaron Francom received first place in advanced woodwork; Ralf Rosen placed third in electronics; and Terrill Slade placed third in auto mechanics. average of nearly 3.70 while playing baseball for the Moun-ties- . I I Airman Jeffrey D, Cochran son of Neldon and Carmen Cochran of Blanding, has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations.
