Around the oil wells Clint Howell and Bill Skeen have been planning new sites walking to stick holes in the ground, as Alice Skeen would say. Jim Lease, a surveyor from Farmington, has been staying with Bill and writing up the legal description of the proposed drilling areas. And Clint Howell has now resorted to the air to keep in touch; that small Cessna 210 buzzing town and then landing on our local strip was old Fly-bHowell. He came in so low Moosie by Doris Valle are flying and bands Flags are playing in Mexican Hat! At least figuratively. Andy Begay, our Navajo cop, is back, altera lengthy bout with a nasty little condition called diverticulitis which culminated in surgery at a Salt Lake City hospital. He is but a shadow of his former solid self. He does not recommend his particular method of it smarted a losing weight bit. Also on the sick list is Jessie Yazzie Black, in Tuba City hospital with gall stones. According to his wife, Mary, Jessie is doing fine although he hasnt been exactly comfortable for a while either. Oscar Eneboe, feeling fine, flew off and away from our local ' airstrip down to Moenkopi with friends, including Dr. Dean Benedict, to a Hopi Butterfly Dance. This is a social dance which the dancers wear in costumes like butterflies. Coming through town briefly were Peg and Paul Forster, from Ogden, on a painting trip for Paul. Mexican Hat remembers Paul Forster from his stay here a years ago when he produced several beautiful oils of Monument Valley in all seasons. He reports that his work is going well, which, to an artist, means that it flows onto the canvas and feels right and that someone is willing to buy the finished As I beproduct. moaned the fact that my .own artist daughter can say the same thing except for the last and most important condition Paul Tell her to hang on. said, No artist ever seems to start selling until hes 40 years old. . They thought some giant bird was about to roost in their branches. Hiking, etc? All good hikes include a few breaks to lie under a cedar, to watch the puffy white clouds billowing gently against the blue, blue sky, to hear the wind sing low through the cedars. Your editor, Joyce Martin, and I did all of that. But then we saw the door of a cliff dwelling across the canyon. When one sees a cliff house in the distance it always becomes a matter of extreme urgency to get to that place. Which is not so bad as fa. r as the climb down is con- cerned. But I never seem able to remember that what goes down (in the bottom of a canyon, that is) must also somehow get up. Complaint Department: Joyces legs are longer than mine. Our discovery was charming. A small dwelling with one door carefully framed in mud shaped by hands a thousand years ago. So we called our cliff dwellingPan-cak- e House. Our adventure got a bit more adventurous on the way down the Moki Dugway when the brakes went out on the car I was driving, just as we started down the steep grade. We continued in low gear, very cautiously. And my own car is still in the trauma encounter with the ward from-it- s cow. Now what do I do? Anybody got a horse for sale?
