CARROTS Quality by Florence Galbraith On the date of his birthday, March 22, my thoughts turned to Joseph Bond Harris, a former San Juan teacher who played a big part in early education in San Juan and was influential in bringhigh school to ing a 4-y- Blanding. Joseph, a Henefer, Utah, native, came to San Juan in 19 07, bringing with him on a week-lon- g buggy his to Bluff from Thompson trip Ashton. one of bride year, Lucy He taught in Bluff for three and in Monticello for one years year before deciding to return to to study medicine his school lifelong dream. When community leaders learned of his plans, they told him he was badly needed as a teacher. He gave up his dream and for 38 years devoted his heart and soul to education in San Juan. served as superintendent of San Juan schools during World War I and taught a full schedule while serving as principal of Blanding schools. He made his visits over the county on a horse or mule. Joseph and his high school boys cleared the brush and trees from the cemetery and made bridges and culverts for town streets. He served as bishop of the Blanding LDS ward, as San Juan Stake president and fulfilled three LDS missions. A carpenter, builder and farmer in his spare time, he was a great reader. He served his as mayor and was community active in the development of water He resources. and Lucy, a fine musician, laid their children on blankets to sleep at the many dances for which Lucy played the piano. The couple helped put on concerts to raise money to buy the first public piano Blanding had. and Lucy celebrated Joseph their golden wedding anniversary in 1956. There were six children Josephine, Ashton, Lucy, Gene, Mary and Jed, who gave his live in action on Okinawa during War n. There are 19 and 60 greatgrandchildren grandchildren. Joseph passed away at age 84 In 1963. Lucy died in 1975. R is hoped by many that someday one of our schools will be named the Joseph B.
