This editorial has also been sent to the Times Independent in Moab, Utah, to inform the residents in the north end of San Juan County of the situation, so that they can voice their opinion to the countv commission. Pillmore To those who desire the It seems ironic to me that while a few shortsighted local businessmen are willing to file lawsuits for the priviledge of selling alcohol, larger corporations in the United States are so alarmed by the incidence of alcoholism among their employees that they are campaigning extensively to educate their workers against the dangers of drinking. That's right, theyre spending money to warn people of it's dangers! In the February issue "Success" there is an article of about Mobile Corporation and the institutions it has set up to cure those who have become alcoholics. The article notes that one in every 10 drinkers becomes an alcoholic and that there are now 10 million of them in the United States. We don't have to look very far in our own county to see evidence of the results of hardcore drinking. Besides the incalculable costs in shame and misery, sickness, suicide, and death, there is a stupefying economic toll in lost production, health care expense, accidents, fires, and violent crime." Are those kinds of things happening just in "Big City" USA? NO way! They are very real problems that already exist in San Juan County and the increased availability of alcohol 678-283- 1 The most recent national figures indicate that there is an estimated loss of over $43 billion annually, from abuse of alcohol can we really afford this kind of econimic loss? Large corporations are in ex-ista- nce to make money, as are local businesses, but they have come to realize that their profits depend in large measure upon their employees their honesty, their production, and their value to the firm. In a study released by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the largest single area of economic cost, was lost production of goods and services attributed to reduced productivity of alcohol-troublmale workers aged ed 21-5- 9. If those facts dont impress you, then consider the following. In a Utah report, 88 percent of Utah State Prison inmates used alcohol prior to their incarceration. Do you think there might be a correlation? Note also that more than half traffic deaths are caused by drinking drivers No, those who drink don't stay in their own home to do it! of the nation's . I agree with the March together for cheap purposes. Dont be naive enough to think for one minute that any fears have been alleviated. The cable television schedules have repeatedly admitted that its product contains profanity, sex, violence, adult situations and nudity. Those descriptions pertain to R rated programs alone. The X rated are probably too dirty to describe. C ncern is for formative children and adolescents who will have it all at their fingertips regardless of the shallow assurances given by Mr. Gary Knowles. Filth is filth. Whether it is shown before 9 p.m. or after 9 p.m. it is still filth. Public decency will not be compromised that easily. Any hapless enter-prenewishing to open an adult book store in Blanding or Monti-cel- lo would have his operation shut down in nothing flat by public outcry. Is there any difference if the same smut is peddled on television? I wish there were someone in San Juan County who had the power and authority to tell the local cable television company that they must pack up their cable and move on; go find some other place to peddle their pornography. They wouldnt leave without a fight however because they have found buyers here and there is too much profit to be had even if its is dirty. Cable television subscribers who watch programs for other reasons ought to band together and demand that the airways be cleaned up and filth gotten rid No parent in San Juan County allow their children to browse through adult bookstores in Salt Lake City, yet the same kind of pornography has been placed at their fingertips in their very own homes.
