There ldlldeer was the cry of the as he refused to abide the hush of night, and the chiding little barn owl asking: Who - who, who - who, who-wh- o. Downstairs in our old brick house. Papa and Mama talked in pleasant voices, sending a thrill of comfort, while out of the night came the chilling howl of the coyote, somehow blending in the melody. It was a wonderful experience, and I reached to absorb the sound and cherish it in my memory. The night song was not always the same; sometimes the wind came sending weird sounds through small cracks around the window. I went scurrying in my imagination after the strange creatures who seemed to dance just beyond the window pane. Sometimes the creatures laughed at us as we snuggled under our covers, but we were safe and warm and their eerie sounds only made our dreams more vivid. the wind came thunder and lightning, bolting and blasting the sky and rumbling against the window. I never could understand why sleep would not come when we would have enjoyed so much to close our eyes and forget the terrible racket. It was different with the rain; sleep always came. No less delightful is the memory of the morning in those long ago times. I was not smart enough to call it pure inspiration, but I did know that when I heard it and smelled it and felt it, I could not keep from hopping and skipping and singing along with and s Creek and raced through the water.
