Betty Lynn is a daughter of Edna and John Rogers Mae of Bloomfield, New Mexico. Edna Mae came at the same time so she could visit her daughter, Betty Lynn, and mother, Fern Simpson. All Senior Citizens interested in the pool tournament to be held October 2 at the Senior Citizens Center at 7 p.m. should see Frank Wright and sign up. You may call him at for details. If anyone wants to see beau- tiful tables they should visit the Senior Citizens Center after Melba Black and Lela Black get through decorating them for the potluck dinners held there every other week on Tuesday evening. They have different flower arrangements each time. Last time they had pots of blooming African violets in every shade of pink and purple, all of which beOne longed to Lela Black. which was very different was loaned by Mae Black; the blooms were purple and white and drew a lot of comment. A big thanks is in order to these talejited ladies and others who give so much of their time. Janet Wilcox and her H girls have brought flower centerpieces down several times to decorate the tables, which is much appreciated. Soneone remarked that Melba and Lela . . 4-- could evey arrange weeds and sagebrush into very pretty centerpieces. On Saturday of Labor Day weekend Jim and Gertrude Shannon invited Doug and me as dinner guests at their home in Monticello. The food was simply delicious and the evening was very enjoyable. After the lovely meal we took a drive up Blue Mountain and the drive was super. We were in hopes of seeing a deer, but bowhunters were ahead of us and had scared them away. Several people were out gathering dry scrap wood for winter fuel, and there were a lot of campers already out. From the looks of the license plates on cars at least eight different states were represented there. Don't forget the all women's stake fireside to be held at the North Chapel this Saturday, September 15, at 7 p.m. over closed circuit direct from Salt . Lake City. The White Mesa people were thrilled on Sunday when one of their community was made president of their group. He is Delbert Begay, who is a son of Cecelia and Huskey Begay. They have their own independent group now, and the Anglo people who have been leaders there for the past several years have been released. Oris Black was released as branch president, Phyrl Black was released as Primary president, Stanley Hawkins was Sunday school president, and Margaret Shumway was Relief We wish Society president. them a lot of success. Bill Bayles reported his mission on Sunday afternoon in 4th Ward. Speaking besides the missionary were his Hurst (Pinkie), who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Reed Hurst. He also saw Steve Bradford. These elders are both serving missions in the Hong Kong District. Steve is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bradford. Small world. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Laws spent several days last week with their son, who had an appointment with a doctor inSalt Lake City. Visiting Pauline Lisonbee from Salt Lake last week were her sisters, Ruth and Pearl. It's always nice to have a visit from family members who live away. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Shumway invite their friends in San Juan County to an open house for their son Kerry and his new wife Marie on Saturday, September 15, in the Blanding library, from 7 to 10 in the evening. Wanda and Wilbur Laws have received a mission call to serve in the Denver - Colorado area. They are due at the mission home October 11. Their family and friends wish for them a very successful mission. Mrs. Julie Johnson, who lives out east of Monticello, was here Sunday to attend her nephew Bill Bayles testimonial. Last week the stork left a brand new baby boy at the home of the Jerry Westrings. It's their third son, and they have two girls. They will call him Buddy.' The Lewis Blacks are happy to have a visit with her mother, Mrs. Geneva Adamson of American Fork, Utah. Grandma Adamson expects to stay about 10 days. Mrs. Nora Nielson reports two new great - granddaughters, both arriving in September. One cam? to her granddaughter Carol and her husband, and one to her granddaughter Sylvia and husband. Proud grandparents of the new babies are Bishop and Mrs. Bud Nielson, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnson, all of Blanding. Dr. Gary Shumway of California State University in Fullerton, California, was a guest speaker at the Utah State Historical Society convention here last weekend. There were lectures, trips to historical banquet and fun for all who attended. People came from all over to attend and sites, a were fascinated by our beautiful country. Cpming from Salt Lake were Audrey and Virgil Peterson, who are members of the society. They are special friends of the Vincent Redds. Audrey is a sister - in - law of the late Ted W. Galbraith, who grew up here. attenders at the Some convention report that while here in 1971 Dr. Shumway and his history students interviewed some of our older citizens and made tapes of events that had taken place here. Before he left this weekend, Dr. Shumway placed tapes and books of these histories at our local library. These should be very interesting to some of you whose parents and relatives were interviewed at that time. A year ago Adriel Norman underwent heart surgery in Salt Lake City and he feared he never would be able to fulfill a dream of going boating on Lake Powell.
