Show 1 Letters to June 29, 1976 To the Editor: This is an open letter to Mr. Mai Jones of Mexican Hat, Utah. Yes, Mai, there really is a Santa Claus! Now if you believe this, you are about to believe some much more, plausible excuses and promises from the powers that be! You may even begin to believe, as I did for a number of years, that something will be done to improve your T.V. signal reception. I, too, have been complaining about the T.V. reception for a much longer time than you have, and I have received excuses, promises, accusations and threats; but no T.V.! I want to caution you that if you persist in your complaints, you will receive more and more promises and less and less service! The Montezuma Creek-Ane- th area has had little or no watchable T.V. since November of 1969! The reception up to that time was marginal, but at least we could - watch all three network channels; then an individual was allowed to disconnect our N.B.C. translator because it interfered with his reception of an Albuquerque station. Since that time, my complaints have harmed more than helped our T.V. reception and I have received newer, more imaginative excuses, accusations of personal feuding and of being a trouble maker and threatened with arrest! (I climbed through a window and replaced a burned fuse in a translator unit that, was supposedly in Canada for repairs). I have complained to almost everyone from the maintenance (?) man to the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C., and I have also asked what services the county receives for the money spent for maintenance, but I have not received an answer to date! I would like to see some of the promises, excuses and explanations printed in this paper rather than hearing them in the customary phone calls that I receive after each of my complaints. These phone calls are not recordable and I can be accused of misquoting when I relate the content of these conversations to others. Where does one draw the line between promises and blatant falsehoods? Our conCouncilman Chapter tacted someone on the board of commissioners on April 11, 1975, and was told that our T.V. would be completely operational on all three channels within 90 days! I made a big red circle on my desk calendar for July 11, 1975, but it is approaching July 11, 1976 and we still have no decent T.V.! During late April or early May of 1975, the county met with a commissioners community group at the Montezuma Creek Elementary school and I was shown an order from the Motorola Corporation for more than$20, 000 worth of new T.V. equipment. Approximately one -- half of this amount was earmarked for the Montezuma Creek translator unit and included new ten-wamplifiers, plus other new equipment. It has not been installed as yet and Pm wondering where this equipment is and if the money was spent! During the winter months, the excuse for our poor T.V. is blamed on the unit on the mountain and the snow makes it impossible for the repairs to be made. I noticed, though, att that when B landing and Mon- - tlhie tic ello did not get a T.V. signal last winter, a helicopter was hired to fly the repair man up to the unit. When there is no snow to blame, the equipment is either on order or being repaired, so there are always excuses but very little performance! Yes Mai, it boils down to the fact that we live in communities that are only wide spots in the road and our political clout is so weak that most of our elected officials dont even bother to campaign in our areas; so why should they waste money and services where there are so few votes! If we could have some Navajo candidates to file for county offices and encourage the other Navajos to register and vote, then the balance of power would make the southern half of the county more important to all candidates. This could create a dichotomy in the electorate and pit one faction against another, but it might promote an equity in the services received between the northern and southern halves of the county! I have talked with residents of Bluff and they do not receive an adequate T.V. signal either. The signal can be amplified and Pve been told that the maintenance (?)man has the technical expertise to in- stall and service the equipment, so if the equipment was ordered more than a year ago, why dont we have a decent T.V. signal? One of our commissioners campaigned on the issue of our T.V. problems and promised to look into the problem! He has kept his promise and looked into it. But we need to elect someone who will do something about it after he We in the southern looks! half of the county have other editor Judge named The Utah State July 5, 1976 Dear Editor, The long awaited Bicentennial day of our nation finally From one coast to arrived. the other, the nation exploded with fireworks, and bands, danc- speeches, singing ing, and parades with all the pagentry and gusto the American people could muster! So, Mai, if you arent satisfied with the pap that you will receive to answer your complaints, maybe we could initiate some sort of a petition in our areas to show the commissioners that we have an issue down here that members of the electorate are concerned about. sTom Sloan Sincerely Aneth Community School Aneth, Utah 84510 Bluff sewers (Contd. from page corporation. 1) Mr. Rodney Praetor, president of a Salt Lake engineering firm which did a preliminary study, to be available in two weeks, said he doubted that 100 per cent of the collector system would be paid by H.U.D. and felt 80 per cent would be more realistic.
