Frost Black was released. Also sustained at Stake Conference were Earl Randall as Stake Librarian and Don Barton as Stake Magazine Director. Jim Greenhalgh was released as Stake Librarian. 20, Francis Lyman To Record Oral History of Area Persons who have participated in the development of Southeastern Utah will have an opportunity to record their experiences this summer. Recognizing the historical val- ue of the recollections of many persons now living in the area, and concerned that many of these persons may soon be the Utah Historical gone, Society and California State University, Fullerton, in cooperation with local historical groups, plan a concerted effort to collect an oral history of this portion of Utah. interviews with persons who participated in significant historical events will be conducted by persons trained in interviewing techniques. A typed copy of the interview session will then be returned to the informant for his corrections, then Tape-record- ed fina- and bound. A copy of the tape and transcription will then be placed in the library of the Utah Historical Society and California State l-typed University, Fullerton. Because of the support turn to Page 4 giv-Plea- se 55, No. 18 Sixteen Honor Henderson Succeeds Kuenn Graduates From At Blanding Elementary County Schools San Juan Countys seniors of 72 will complete their high school careers via graduation this week: from San Juan High at 8 p.m. Friday evening in Blanding; from Monticello High at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday). At Monticello, the annual Senior Tea will precede graduation, from 6:30 to 7:30. for Monticello Speaker commencement is Ray Odette, an MHS graduate who coached Buckaroo football for five years before his move to Jordan High School in the fall of 1971. He has just accepted appointment as head football coach at Snow College. Addressing the San Juan High will be Dr. Reed Bradford of the Sociology Department at Brigham Young University. Valedictorians at San Juan are Lizbeth Guymon, Val Jones, Stephanie Kartchner and Dena Lyman, all of whom completed high school with straight 4.0 (A) averages. Other honor students in the San Juan class of 72 are Becky Homedew, Barbara Huber, Jane Hurst, TaunyaJones and Mary Ann Shumway. A student has to maintain at least a 3.8 average to make the honor list. At Monticello High, honor students, are RobAdams, Monte Christensen, Robert Fran-coKerry Freestone, Steve Rogers, John Roring and Dave Smith. Monte, Robert andDave will speak at graduation. See Pictures on Pages 5, 8 & 9 m, Peter Henderson has been appointed principal of the Blanding Elementary School. Mr. Henderson was recommended by a screening committee, following interviews with five applicants. Mr. Henderson has served as principal of the Montezuma Creek School since 1969. He received a B. S. Degree in 1961 from Brigham Young University and a Master of Education Degree in educational administration from Brigham Young University in 1969. Mr. Henderson will assume his new duties on July 1. Mr. Henderson and his wife, Linda Rae, have five children. Mr. John Kuehn, who has been the principal at Blanding Elementary for the past three years, has been accepted in a doctoral program at Indiana University. He and his family will be leaving Blanding on June 10. Peter Henderson Wheels Moving on Highway Signs San Juan County Commis- sioner Calvin Black met Mon- day with Utah and Arizona highway department officials to discuss more adequate signing near the junction of the road north from Kayenta into Utah. Proposed new signs would list distances to major San Juan County communities, as well as prominent refer- ence to the parks and monuments in San Juan. Commissioner Black reports a favorable reception from Arizona officials. The drive for signing more conducive to Utah tourism and the campaign for more and better roads in southern Utah Please turn to Page 3 Kirby Appointed Police Chief Jack Kirby has been re- appointed to the position of Chief of Police in Monticello, effective June 15. His selection was announced by the Monticello City Council following their May 17th meeting. |
