At least a dozen people, and possibly several more which we failed to count, have what appears to be a very valid complaint this week. Seems that with the nice spring weather over the weekend, many people decided to visit the. Bureau of Land Managements overlooks and campgrounds on Hatch Mesa. What evolved, however, was far from a pleasant experience for many. There is an inadequacy in fact a complete lack of signs on Hatch to direct visitors and with only gravel roads, and many roads cut by seismograph crews, finding the main road to each of the overlooks is at best a matter of guess. It would appear that with the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent for the road and improvement of the visitor facilities, a few small signs would be in order. If the local people who know the area cant even find their way, then the tourist is going to be just as lost. Time for a change... Perhaps no one had realized it but up until the final filing date Tuesday, San Juan County had no candidates for state representative. Former Representative Leland Redd, Blanding, did not again seek office and it appeared for a time no one would file for the position. As it were, however, two candidates did file before the deadline Tuesday but the situation brings up the question of just why no one filed earlier seeking the office. The answer is quite simple finances. The state representative position pays so little that it actually costs the individual. He cannot make even enough to cover expenses. It is fine to keep legislators salaries to a minimum but no person should be expected to actually dig into his own funds in order to serve on the legislature. These people are providing an absolute necessary service to all of the people of the state and should be paid commensurate with the responsibilities or at least the costs of their position. The last legislature attempted to change the salary but met with no success. For the good of the state and the quality of government we certainly hope that the new state body will see fit to correct this unfair It is up to you Sometime during April Cancer Control Month you will be asked some pertinent questions about can- cer and given the answers to them by volunteers of the American Cancer Society who will be calling on you. It is not necessary that you know the answers to the ,all questions: Are we getting anywhere against cancer? What signs or symptoms may mean cancer? Which type of cancer is increasing most rapidly? What type of cancer kills most Americans? What can you do to protect yourself against cancer. But you should know cancers seven danger signals and visit your doctor if any one of them should persist more than two weeks. Cancer usually starts quietly and spreads without pain. In the beginning, a danger signal may seem very unimportant to you, but it could be most important to your life. It is important for you to know that 75 per cent of the 76,000 men and women who will develop cancer of the colon and rectum this year could be saved by early diagnosis and prompt treatment. The best protection against death from this disease is a simple proctoscopic examination once a year. Cancer of the lung is the most rapidly mounting cause of death from cancer. The American Cancer Society says that if no one smoked cigarettes a great majority of lung cancers would be prevented. It adds, however, that smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer, as air pollution is also believed a major cause. Annual health checkups are a necessity as many cancers discovered during health checkup can be cured. As for the question: Are we getting anywhere against cancer? The answer is yes. More than 1,200,000 men, women and children are alive today, cured of cancer. Improvements in surgery, radiation, use of drugs, new techniques of diagnosis, better facilities for treatment, the publics concern about cancer and action that concern, are saving the lives of tens of thousands of Americans annually, who would have died if they had had the disease less than a generation ago. The local cancer volunteers point out that costly research has accomplished most of the present progress and this is one of the reasons why everyone should support the American Cancer Societys programs. Funds raised do help locally, also, as evidenced by the fact that last year five countians afflicted with cancer received financial aid and four received sick room supplies from the society. ; About 90,000 cancer patients will probably die In 1964 who might have been saved by earlier diagnosis and prompt treatment. The American Cancer Society seeks to save this unnecessary loss of life through public and professional education and service to patients. It needs your support to carry on this work. life-savin- g i I Since 1945, the American Cancer Society has supported research totalling more than $127,000,000. Its research program covers all phases of the causes, cures, treatment and diagnosis of cancer. To continue to make research gains against cancer, support the Societys April crusade. A cliche phrase but one that aptly fits the situation surrounding the decision to drain Lake Powell' in order to hold a power head at Lake Mead. Millions of dollars worth of publicity on Powell will be all but wasted if the drawdown is continued and we are left with little more than a tadpole wallow where once began a magnificent lake in the red rock canyons. And it wouldnt be quite so bad if the decision appeared to have been made for economic reasons but as it were it smacks heavily of politics. California and Mexico, one being heavy in electoral votes and the other a close ally of the U.S., have reaped the benefit of more water than was their entitlement from Lake Mead. Thus Mead is left in a drawn-dowcondition and, since little power can be generated with the lake so low, more water must be secured. Then here sits Glen Canyon Dam, new and as yet without benefit of enough water for a power head. Gates on Glen Canyon are opened and what little water that has been stored above what was required to be turned through to Mead anyway, escapes just like pulling a plug out of a bathtub. That the big tub holds millions of fish that could very easily be destroyed if water tempera- n PLASTIC HASH CAN tures fluctuate and also provides a mecca for vacationers or it would have had it been able to float a boat seems to mean little. But worse than this, Glen Canyon will be able to get no power head at all, thus pushing the time further back when the dam can finally begin power generation and start paying for itself. Upper Basing states are up in arms about the most recent bureaucratic decision. And rightly so. DAYS ONLY Back to more pleasant topics, spring literally busted out all over the county Sunday and Monday, And a sure sign of the season was a little female driver seen wheeling her three-whetrike down the center of First North. She made it to Main Street, stopped like any good driver should, and surveyed the traffic situation. She decided the flow of the giant cars was too much and turned around to head back west on First North. The uphill grade was more than she had bargained for but she was plucked from harms way by a city em; ploye before she had a chance to roll back into the LIST PRICE $6.95 A 4 a Cleaner.
