Perkins' Stock By VIRGINIA APGAR, M.D. Director, Division of Congenital Malformations The National Foundation-Marc-h of Dimes The approach of the new year is a traditional time for looking back, taking stock and planning ahead. For me, some of the most interesting findings during the past year revolved around these questions: What do we know about preventing birth defects, a problem as old as time? Are there any specific rules we can give a woman who is pregnant? What do we now know that we didnt know before? , Fortunately, the past year has been productive. We do know more than we ever knew before about preventing birth defects. And while there still is much we dont know, we can give a pregnant woman some rules to follow. Since 1958, The National Foundation-March of Dimes, which was responsible for the development of the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines, has been searching for the causes and preventives of birth defects. March of Dimes Conference One of the highlights in this research area was the Second Conference on International Congenital Malformations, The National sponsored by Foundation, held in New York City during the past year. Here, 1,400 medical people from 22 countries met to report their latest findings in the field of birth defects, and to talk with their colleagues in allied fields about causes and possible preventives. Also discussed were projects involving basic research, which we need for a foundation upon which to build theories about causes and preventives. One of the most interesting speakers was Dr. Widukind Lenz, a West German geneticist on the staff of Hamburg Dr. Virginia Apgar University. It was Dr. Lenz who first connected the recent serious outbreak of birth defects in his country to the sedative thalidomide. According to Dr. Lenz, Formerly, many human biologists, taking a normal uterine environment for granted, used to attribute almost every malformation to heredity. Chemicals Have Effect However, he says, there is a need for a change in this type of thinking, because the chemical environment of man has greatly changed in recent decades due to the introduction of many chemicals. Some of these have been devised with the special purpose to block chemical reactions in man, animals, plants or unicellular organisms. Therefore, this new medical trend produces this advice to a pregnant woman: . At present, any woman who is in the first few months of pregnancy, or is uncertain as to vhe'i er or not she S r r your Rh-fact- or blood type, and your husband's. Tell your doctor. Inform any other doctor whom you have reason to see that you are pregnant, or that you think you are pregnant. This information is vital in the case of X rays or fluoroscopy, which, during the early months of pregnancy, might harm the unborn child. If these procedures can be postponed until later, your doctor will do so. Never knowingly expose yourself to German measles, or to any other infectious disease when pregnant. By Norman E. Lundell BLANDING San Juan High lost their basketball game to East Carbon last Frito make their league day record for the season. This Friday the Broncos travel to Moab for a game. Last week the Broncos were cold, nervous and jittery. The result was bad passes and missed shots. Harold Stevens came on stronger with the scoring punch in the later stages of the game and Robert Nielson began to pump in some. Other than that, the Broncos could hardly hit the basket. Only five players hit a total of 14 field goals. Harold Stevens got 7 of these and Robert Nielson got 4. Three other players got one field goal each. Even East Carbon was cold during the early part of the game. There was a period of six minutes in the first half of the game when neither side could make a basket. The score continued to stand at for East Carbon. Martinez began to score on some nice drives with a slow, easy, underhand layup. He led all the Viking scorers with 17 points. The loss for the Broncos is just about summed up in two bad passing and phrases cold shooting. 36-4- 6 2 second half spurt using break and full court the Moab Red Devils away from the Monticello Buckaroos in a league cage game in Moab last Friday and royally thumped the visitors from Monticello by a score. The fast breaking, play is the style of ball that the Buckaroos themselves like best but Moab turned the tables and used the same tactics. At the end of the first period Moab led by only four and during the points, first half the Buckaroos had actually been ahead many times. Lack of rebound strength on the part and of the Buckaroos soon gave 5 the Devils a advantage at the end of the third period and they managed to maintain the lead until the gun. Monticellos Howard Nielson and Moabs Leystra tied for high point honors in the game with 19 apiece. Field goals attempted and percentages spelled the difference in the final half of the game. In the first two periods Monticello attempted 29 and made 10 for a 35 per cent average while Moab attempted 24 and made 12 for 50 per cent The Buckaroos were unable to get shots in the last half and made eight of 28 while Moab struck for 14 of 41. Pressured by the press the Monticellans were unable to move the ball. Because, according to Dr. Lenz, almost nothing is known of the role of chemicals in the production of human malformations. Rnles Are Given This, then, would be the first rule for a pregnant woman: Do not take any medication at all no matter Whether you got it with a prescription or without a prescription unless it is specifically prescribed to you by your doctor FOR USE AT THIS TIME. Never, during a pregnancy, take pills which your doctor gave you before you became pregnant. Never take pills prescribed for anyone else. In our country, at least one thalidomide tragedy occurred when the woman took pills prescribed for her husband, not for her. Here are other rules for a woman about to become a mother: See your doctor or a prenatal clinic as soon as you think you are pregnant. Only recently, weve found that the first few months of pregnancy are most important, and that good care at this time is vital for the baby. Follow the diet your doctor prescribes. Dont take extra vitamin pills or any other fancy vitamin supplements without checking with your doctor. Know BLANDING LOCALS Cold shooting, bad passes ) |
