Burton Returns From With new attendance reoords belnt established almost every week In both the major and minor baseball circuit there appears to be a revival of interest In the great national game that surpasses that of any previous year. A check on but a few of Sunday's games showed that reoord crowds were in attendance at Seattle. Pacific Coast league, fo see San Frandsco and Seattle play, at Chicago to see the Yanks and White Sox and at New York to see the Giants and Cincinnati line up. The 43.CO0 people who Journeyed to Comlskey's park at Chicago' went there to see the game be tween the first and eighth place' teams, while the season's record crowd of 9100 out at Seattle also was between witnessing a the first and last place nines. More than 40,000 funs were In attendance game. at the New A week previous New York and De37,751 troit entertained paid attendants. Chicago and New York, Nationals, played before 40,000 fans and lirooklyn and Pittsburgh drew more On than 25,000 people. Thursday, May 24, more than 41.000 fans, the largest crowd that ever Jammed Its way Into a Philadelphia ball park, were out to see the game between New York and Philadelphia. Other thousands were turned away, while many fans saw the game by clinging to the rim of the right field bleachers or from house tops across the street from the bull park. DRAW REAL INTEREST. The above records are cited from but a few games, but It Is a fact that teams from both major leagues, together with a number of the minor circuits, notably the Pacific Coast league, have drawn more fans to their parks this season than ever before. The reason for such Increased Interest can be due only In part to the race for the league bunting, for, as had been Indicated, games played between first and last place teams have drawn unusually large crowds. The logical reason therefor must be due to the desire of the fans to see the game because of their love of the sport. Whether this enthusiasm developed to such a high pitch in other leagues is to be' carried to the cities supporto teams Is yet to be deing termined. A rather marked Improvement over that exhibited a year ago has been noticeable, but there Is still The fans will much to be desired. naturally demand that the teams composing the league display the best brand of ball possible, and that they continue to show the pep and spirit If that they have so far displayed. the team managers Insist on this type of ball, there Is no reason to doubt that the spirit of baseball enthusiasm which Is at present marked in all sections of the country will be carried to the Utah and Idaho cities. The fans will then attend the games, not as a sense of duty to their community, but rather because they have, awakened a real Interest and love sport. . . Totala 33 8 27 . 20 8 27 10 . "You hava to shorten up th field for one thing, play in closer, so you can get the ball quicker; three, four or six feet closer make a lot of difference." "And th harder they hit 'em the better we like It," aald Crltz. "Gives us more time to work." "Another Important thing la knowing your hlttera," went on Ford "where they actually hit th ball, d whether they're fast or slow. hitters are easier to double than lefties. Theyr mora likely to hit them to shortstop, where It la easier to start a double play. A short-ato- p can gat the ball away faster on most playa, as a second baseman has to turo to throw to second.
