Show 6A Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday September 28, 2004 Commentary LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Remembering Slavery Tobacco Regulation Dear Editor, As a citizen volunteering in ; ! iny community to suppress the use of tobacco products and assist programs, I am concerned about a proposal to require the FDA to regulate tobacco products. Now included as part of the FSCETI bill set to be considconferered by a Senate-Hous- e ence committee in September, the DeWineKennedy amendment would provide the Fbod and Drug Admin. (FDA) with certain authority to regulate tobacco products. If this bill were enacted, the current public discussion regarding the possible benefits of tobacco' harm reduction could be seriously curtailed. This bill essentially makes FDA the gatekeeper for what information the media, and the consumer, quit-smoki- . may have access to. The pas- sage of this FDA regulation would suppress important health information about the relative risk of tobacco products. This bill would change the core mission of a federal agency without having the issue ever studied by Congress. The 600 page bill never had a committee hearing, markup or floor debate. It has not been discussed with FDA officials to determine if they wrou!d even be able to handle it. This legislation needs to be thoroughly reviewed by Congress so that its impact is understood, and not attached to a different bill without any study The FDA bill will allow monopolies of big tobacco companies by suppressing any new or smaller companies, and curtailing the necessity of big tobacco to continue public dialogue re- - Dear Editor, garding tobacco harm reduc- In our history there is memory, It is a memory of a a dark tragic time. It is the tion. The millions, perhaps billions, of tax dollars it will take to set up a new Bureau could be much better spent on existing programs for memory of slavery. The slaves crime was that they were captured. Upon this abuse was heaped the horrible idea that it was a sin to be black. The chains that hung upon their bodies were also upon their minds. In point of fact it was sometimes considered a sin to be any color other than white or to be quit-smoki- and non- - smoking ad cam- propaigns, and for grass-root- s grams, to educate children on the harmful effects of tobacco products, to encourage them to never start, and help them, and their adult parents, manage the problems inherent with quitting. If you w'ould like to stop this bill from happening, you need to contact Senator Hatch immediately with a written letter or email at Senator Orrin Hatch, 104 Hart Senate Office Bldg., Washington, D.C. 20510, Weve been hearing the last few days of the mudslides in Haiti and the people made homeless or who died due to hurricane Jeanne. Some of the cause Connie Copenhaver Green River of this is the poverty of the people who had no other source of fuel to cook and heat but wood of the forests. Another great cause is the destruction of the forests for various commercial purposes. Appealed Gas permits Dear Editor, It has been reported that the Bureau of Land Management will offer 362,665 acres of land for oil and gas leasing. Watch for the appeals to be coming in protesting the drilling applications. I cannot recall in the past years of a single gas or oil application filed that was not appealed by the several me? Local businesses, special interest groups, community services, school talents and of course the Peach Days Royalty, all play a vital role in its success. This year, however, there seemed to be some lack of planning in certain areas, wilich came at the expense of the young women representing Ferrons Royalty. For several weeks, the little girls and the youngwomen have - been preparing and competing in the annual Peach Blossom and Peach Days pageants, getting ready for the big day. Along vvith the earning of their royalty positions, come their responsibilities and obligations for the Upcoming events of Peach Days. They were to wear crowns and banners, and be present at all the festivities, readily volunteering their help when needed. They were also asked to prepare and perform their talents for the entertainment and enjoyment of the spectators. In years past, this is one of the activities that has taken place in the Mayors Park, nursing home and the rodeo grounds. The set provided this year was not conducive for a good performance. Also, shouldnt they have been admitted free and perhaps had assignments and a schedule of events, and also been provided with a place to perform their talents in veivv of the spectators when introduced to the audience? Instead, the girls were humiliated and discouraged when they were turned away at the gate for lack of entry money; or having to pay, thinking they would be perfoming their routines and songs. The only place available was the announcers box above the audience, out of view. Some tried singing, but to no avail as the system was so distorted, they PEOPLE WHO DONT HAVE AN AGENT-WH- O TAKES CARE OF THEM? CALL ME FOR A FREE PROTECTION REVIEW. Tracy Wilcox 71 S. How disappointing for these young Peach Blossoms and Peach Days Royalty, who worked so hard to represent Ferron Peach Days, being led into thinking they would be part of the celebration festivities, and then treated in this nonchalant manner. I am sorry for those asked to perform and the paying audience who came to watch and support them. Perhpas some serious thought should be given to this issue for the kids sake and for the integrity of Peach Days. Jerry Damron Clawson Reclaim America from the cronies by temporarily disregarding political party affiliations. Select only congressional candidatesleaders who will reform public corporation laws and guarantee individual security and respect. We also need leaders who will broaden education and medical entitlements. We need leaders who will restrict assault weapons, stop gouging and looting and expand transparency and openness. Reversing the very wealthy tax Dear Editor, There are twro things that make this the greatest nation in the history of the world. One is the people who make this country go forward and the other is our Constitution. Without the American people, the most decent and generous people on earth, our country would not function. And without our Constitution, our country and its people would be subjected to the rule of dictators such as Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein and Joseph Stalin. Our country has been structured under the Constitution to preserve and protect certain freedoms that are essential to maintaining a free and decent society. The most important of these are freedom of religion (not freedom from religion as a lot of liberals would like it to say), freedom of the press and the right to keep and bear arms. If any of these rights are stripped from us or abused to the point which people lose faith and understanding of their meanings, we will start down a slippery slope to destruction. Since I was young, and more particularly over the last 12 years, I have watched the most powerful part of our national giveaways and balancing the federal budget are also needed. We need leaders who will stop social securityeducationmedi-car- e privatizations and stop mixing church and state. Also, stopping no bid profiteering, impounding eorporatecriminal assets, improving relations with the other 160 not willingUnited Nations and mandating due process and respect to citizens of every nation, detained by our govermnent. Whether we like the thought or not, we as the U.S. are, to a great extent, Orangeville media slip so far to the left that they have totally lost any trace of objectivity whatsoever. And since the elections of President Bush they have gone completely over the edge. The mainstream press has been completely overcome with the obsession to destroy this good and decent man. The degree to which these people and the democrats have sickened me is almost indescribable. They care for nothing except the reacquisition of their power. I have watched the steady stream of disinformation and complete lies about our president for the last three years. They have trotted out every partisan and propagandist they can find. People like Michael Moore (who was recently employed by USA Today), Richard Clark, and Kitty Kelly. People who can barely get their wild accusations out of their mouth before they are discredited. An now, in the case of CBS, they have even promoted apparently false documents without even bothering to verify the authenticity of their sources. Whether this is an honest mistake, incompetence, or what, I believe it is a desperate attempt to harm this president by any means necessary, they have gone w'ay too far and dont seem to care about the consequences. The problem is the consequences go far beyond a presi- dential election. What really outrages me about CBS and the rest of the media elite is how they know the power they have over the news and they are abusingit to the point of complete lunacy. Reporters have but one true obligation, report the news. But these people think they should not only report the news, but they should also influence opinion. This is not only wTong, but very dangerous. WTen CBS and the mainstream media abuse the freedom they love to hide behind, they weaken the nations confidence in the press. Reporters should be held responsible and be discharged immediately. I feel the best way to get our point across to those people is to simply stop watching them. I dont get my news from any of these people any more, I go to Fox news, talk radio, the internet and our local paper. They are the only sources I trust any more. CBS and their cohorts in the media must be held accountable for their bias and disingenuous reporting. Patrick N. Sundstrom Emery News Tips?
