Show Fall Sports Guide August 2004 17 In a sport that relies strictly on personal fortitude, training and talent, high school teams still find plenty of people ready to do nothing else other than run for their school. The Emery Spartans, under the direction of Coach Darrell Gardner, are ready to run. With five seniors and two juniors returning for the Spartans, Emery is poised to make a serious run this year. Running for the Spartans will be Ryan Jensen, Newt Jensen, Taylor Jensen, Jex Jensen, Derek Jensen, Kendall Bird and Brandon Singleton. First year coach Christy Guymon coaches the Lady Spartans. Returning runners will be Chelsie Benson, Shayla Pitchforth, Shari Tuttle and Alexis Swasey. We have a good bunch of kids coming back because we were such a young team last year, Coach Guymon indicated. They have been working hard this summer to improve and get stronger with more endurance. We are looking for good things this year. Participation in cross country is open to everybody; all interested athletes need is good running shoes. Coach Gardner said he firmly believes that alternating between two pair of shoes will help eliminate the biggest problem for runners of any age, that of shin splints. Practice is held in the hills by the high school. Participants run over asphalt, grass and dirt and will probably have to jump some water. Meets take place once a week with the state meet held this year on Oct. 20. iism & Sms Cmstmctim Serving Emery Co.
