Oier the next 50 years, Smokey became quite a celebrity, with his own theme song, posters, television and radio w adtertisements. Nearly ry kid in America knows Smokey and his message, "Only you can proxent forest fires." He is, in fact, one n of the most recognized in characters America. In 2001, at the age of 50, Smokey 's message changed a little, in response to new fire dangers. He now warns, Only you can pre-ewildfires. During a dexastating fire in the Capitan Mountains of Now Mexico, forest rangers, Getting Ready for the Fair soldiers and xolunteers xxorked together to control the blaze. In a lull in the fire fighting, someone reported seeing-- little hear cub xx near the fire line. They left him alone because they thought his mother would come for him. an-deri- until the fire had burned past them. Nearby the little cub had been caught in the path of the same fire and had not fared so xvell. He had taken refuge in a tree that xxas now nothing-bua charred, smoking- snag. The climb had saved his life, but he xvas badly burned on his paws and hind legs. A rancher w ho had been helping the firefighters, agreed to take the cub home. A New Mexico Department of t - heard about the cub when he returned from the fire camp and droxe to the rancher's home to get the hear. The cub needl'd xet-e- r inary aid and was flown in a small plane to Santa Fe nationw ide Many people xvrote or called to inquire about the little bear's progress.
