Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale Utah Tuesday February 11, 2003 9A Fourth Grade Class Takes a Walk Back to Pioneer Time Local Woman Takes Part in Discussion on World Events On Jan JO, Julie Johansen's fourth grade class at Hunting-to- n Klementary celebrated their own pioneer day The children came to school in pioneer dress and experienced what school w as like for the children in those games net-wor- non-partisa- n, noil-bias- day s They began the day learning to make their ow n bread from scratch After that, the students ga e recitations of a poem they had learned During the day, all the students wrote on slates with chalk to learn their lessons The students made butter to go on their freshly baked bread Afterw ard. they play ed pioneer during meals The entire group of delegates w ere able to meet a panel of experts in these areas. The groups then met for the filming of the documentary. They questioned Ambassador Richard Haass of the United States Department of State and Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Seeurty Adisor, about the issues that each group felt pertinent to America's role in world affairs Each group se- - from the National Issues lbrum, k nationw ide of educational organizations that com one local public forums MF is and the moderators do not adxoeate a specific solution, rather they educate the public in an effort to help the citizens make more informed and thought out deci- a sions National Security was cussed in the first breakout Julie Christensen of ' Castle Dale Julie Christensen, a Castle Dale resident, recently took part in a PBS documentary hosted by MacNeilLehrer Productions By The People. America in the World" was the first in a series of documentaries to explore the American public's knowledge and aw areness of our country's role in the post September world. The Unhersity of California at Berkeley selected the participants from a random cross section of America's population These people then reeeix ed briefing booklets to read before they undertook the trip to Philadelphia to act as delegates for the American people. The delegates were from all age groups, backgrounds and education leels Upon arri al, the group was dixided into 24 small groups and within IK) minutes of arming in Philadelphia, the delegates were ha ingdinner and orientation They weregixena disses- - . u 4 v 4 V A 1 1 - - - - z x ? t v-j.... j. ..l..ji Barbra Jones displays the finished product. m'wvvm Students knead their bread in a ziplock bag '1 he delegates were also shown ideos outlining and four different apthat can be used by the proaches US to deal with current situations These ideos opened the subject to discussion of the choices ax tillable to America and its role in world situations During the weekend, the breakout sessions would eoer different topics, such as foreign policy, economics and world hunger Their day would start at I! la a m and with wake-uwould continue throughout the day, e en continuing discussions sion p lected a spokesperson to ask the questions of Ambassador Haass Bach spokesperson had an opportunity to ask an initial quesquestion and follow-u- p tions to clarify the answers. These questions dealt mostly w ith the Iraq situation and background information involved with making the decisions on how American should proceed. Filming of the documentary took place Sunday exeningand was aired lixe on PBS. Christensen said, The experience w its one I'll nex er forget and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
