Show 8A Emery County Progress, Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday, June 15, 1993 Tax survey shows varying attitudes The attendees of the annual Utah Taxes Now Conference rated the conference a four out of a possible five for its content and coverage of the latest and most pressing tax issues Utah is facing. The survey also asked attendees views on the various themes of the conference. An overwhelming majority - 96 percent - believed that state and local fees should be based on the cost of providing service and 65 percent of conference attendees believed that the legislature should exercise additional oversight in their regulation. There remains strong support for continued efforts to eliminate the taxation of business inputs. Eighty-sipercent of conference respondents favored sales tax exemptions on parts and equipment with a useful life of less than three years and on materials consumed in the x w sales tax on food or business inputs. Only 10 percent of attendees believed the increased revenues should be used to increase spending. Conference attendees believed that the sales and use tax was the tax most in need of simplification, followed by individual income taxes, corporate franchise taxes, and manufacturing process. While there is strong support for simplifying the sales tax vendor discount 17 percent-- attendees conference were split on what uniform rate should be adopted. Twenty-on- e percent of attendees believed the current 1 percent rate for the local sales tax should be adopted as the uniform rate while 18 percent preferred the statess 1.5 percent and 32 percent favored a blended rate. Twenty-nin- e percent favored eliminating the vendor discount. Of conference attendees, 79 percent believed that Utah should pursue collection of sales tax on remote sales. However, a combined payroll taxes. Seventy percent do not support additional legislative mandate for health care ser- vices. When the results are tabulated by profession, some interesting trends were apparent. For instance, of the government and elected officials who responded to the survey, nearly half did not support continued efforts to eliminate the taxation of business inputs. By contrast, all business and tax practitioner survey respondents favored contin- 90 per- cent of respondents believed that the increased revenues should be used to either reduce the general sales tax rate or be targeted to other tax cuts such as eliminating the extends comment period BLM The Bureau of band New Mexico; Lakewood, Management announced Colorado; Midland, Texas; that it is extending, for an Vernal, Utah; Casper, Wyo- (http:www.blm. govnhp newsoilgasfacts. html).
