Show - Tuesday, Emery Tax-planni- strategies save money ng Pv JOHN FORD Financial adviser most people, the end of the busiest time of a'l There are parties to throw, rifts to buy and the round of deadlines to For t'.i year is ever-j-ree- Because of these time nt pres- sures, some people are tempted t bu mp year-en- d tax planning w t he bottom of their to-d- o list skip it altogether. Putting it like a good idea at the t . true, but in the long run it Id end up costing you money. Mnce year-enis just und the corner, the follow-i- i ire some tax planning tips d msider. Balance gains and losses. A itegy you might consider is ally up capital gains and , ; i i c.s- ncluding expected capi-- ; rains distributions from uial funds- - and aim for a n net loss. A $3,000 capi-- i kiss ($1,500 for married in- - out) i duals filing separately) can icducted in full; against your r i ncome, excess losses may i carried forward to future ll s , onsider cash gifts for your dren. By setting up foryour kids, you 'hift stock or other assets uiir minor children who are ly in lower income tax kets than you. Under the ( custo-accoun- : January 26. 1993 7B ts Kiddie Tax, the first $700 of a childs income from assets in a Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) and Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) account, and any investment earnings from all other sources is for children under age 14. The next $700 in earnings are taxed at the childs rate. Make charitable contributions. Giving money to your favorite charity is a positive move for the charity and your taxes. There are many ways to do this. You can give cash directly to a charity and obtain a receipt for tax purposes. (You must obtain a receipt if the gift is $250 or more). If you have appreciated stock or stock mutual funds that youve held for more than one year, you can donate it to a charitable organization to avoid the capital gains tax and get a deduction. You can donate clothing or household items. (Be sure to get a receipt and deduct only the fair market value of the items. You can only deduct the fair market value of tangible personal property items that will be used by the charity in such a manner that the use of the gift is related to the exempt purposes of the donor, otherwise you can only deduct your basis in the property.) Contribute to your IRA. IRAs are a good way to lower your tax liability and put money away for retirement. You can contribute up to accounts $2,000 ($4,000 for couples) per year and deduct the contribution to a Traditional IRA from your income if you meet certain income qualifications. Another retirement vehicle is the Roth IRA. Although contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax deductible, earnings in the account compound tax free-njust tax deferred- - for people who hold their account at least five years and are 59 ! 2 or older when they being withdrawals. Tax advantage of your benefit plants. If your employer has a 401k plan, consider making the maximum contributions. Since your contributions dolcan be made with pre-talars they lower your current taxable income. Pre-tacontributions and earnings on such contributions are until withdrawn. In addition, you may be eligible for employer matching contributions-whicmake a 401k even more attractive. Keep in mind that if you have a cafeteria benefit plan, you reduce your taxable income by contributing to spending accounts so that certain outlays (such as uninsured medical expenses) can be paid with predoltax rather than after-talars. Money left in spending tax-fre- e cant be carried into the next year, so be sure to pay dentist or doctor bills and purchase prescriptions by year-en- d so you will be eligible for reimbursements. Itemize miscellaneous deductions. Items such as tax preparation, certain employee business expenses that arent reimbursed and some investment expense can be deducted. If all of these miscellaneous items top 2 percent of your adjusted gross income, the excess is deductible. So, if, for example, you expect your ad- ot justed gross income to be $60,000 and youve already spent at least $1,200 on miscellaneous deductions, youve met the requirements. Then, any additional qualifying expenses you incur by year-en- d are fully deductible. On the other hand, if you only have x x $500 in miscellaneous ex- penses this year, you may want to wait until January to make additional purchases. That way you may end up getting a deduction next year. These are just a few ideas to think about now and throughout the year. Whatever your financial situation, its always a good idea to consult knowledgeable tax and financial advisors during the year to make sure you have a strategy thats on truck with your goals. h tax-planni- x Water rights settlement decided for protection takes first Nickolas Callor resources stream-relate- d monumental water isting water users, was the rights challenge was bal- solve problems.
