A new method of putting the final finish on new cars powder topcoating may help the surface maintain a shiny, showroom look. A dry, powder spray is used instead of liquid paint. Just before the powder particles are sprayed onto the cars body, they are given an electric charge that can help them cling to surfaces. Then, the particles are cured with heat to produce a smooth, durable finish. This finish is more durable, will last longer and look better foralongerperiodoftime, said Pat Goss, a nationally known automotive consultant and cohost of the PBS Network show, Motor Week. The powder is also kind to the environment in these ways: The minimal amount of overspray is powder-particl- e nearly 100 percent recyclable. Powder doesnt give off harmful fumes and, therefore, it is labor friendly' for the thousands of people who help manufacture and paint automobiles. Initially, BMW and Volvo started switching over from liq g ozone-formin- g timed-releas- e Pansies are surprisingly cold-hard- easily tolerating y, temperatures of 15 degrees without damage. Under a cover ofsnow or mulch, they survive even lower temperatures. According to Denise Johnson of Ball Seed Company in West Chicago, the hardiest varieties are generally those with small, deep colored blossoms. One of the most cold resistant ones, 8 Baby Bingo, survived the winter at Michigan State University. Another key to hardiness is planting early enough to give plants time to establish their roots before cold weather. To root well, plants need at least auto-make- Ford and Chrysler have formed a consortium called USCAR to test powder coating application techniques and durability. Bruch said the companys plant in Dingolfing, Germany, will turn out 70,000 Series 5 and Series 7 cars with powder topcoatingthisvear. Next year, Bruch said, All our cars, a total of 270,000, will have powder topcoat. Volvo is putting the new finish on its sports coupe and convertible. The company will be producing 20,000 powder topcoat cars this year at its plant in Uddevalla, Sweden, spokesman Dan Johnston said. T o make lots of flowers, pansies need at least six hours of sunlight each day and plenty of nutrition. When planting, work a fertilizer such as Pansy Booster with Polyon into the soil. In late winter, reapply according to label directions. Be sure to water transplants (in their packs) before planting, and water the regularly if the weather is diy. Use pansies as companions to early spring bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. Theyll bring evergreen foliage and color to the bare winter ground. In spring, pansies will be a carpet of color underneath the daffodils and tulips. Finally, as if they needed one more attribute, a few pansies have a delicate sweet perfume. According to BMWs Weiland Bruch, liquid paint spray can emit gases which contribute to the greenhouse, Liquid paint spray also produces sludge which must be disposed of properly. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT T. 16 S., R. 7 E SLM, Emery County, Utah, The FERRON CITY PUBLIC NOTICE a to modify the lease as proposed. The lease modification would be subject to existing lease terms ! and conditions and special lease stipulations for the protection of resources. If the modification is approved, the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining would approve the associated IBC. The Office of Surface Mining participated in preparation of the EAas a cooperating agency. The preferred alternative is Alternative 3 (Revised Proposed Action). Alternative 3 would modify the lease by adding 50 acres subject to the special coal lease stipulations attached to the original lease. PacifiCorp's proposed IBC for the lease modification area would extend underground development workings and two longwall penels into the modified lease area. This would allow longwall panels in the existing leased areas to be extended further to the west, maximizing coal production, with some subsidence, but no additional failure of the Castlegate Sandstone escarpment. The EA is available for review at the Forest Supervisor's Office in Price, Utah. Comments will be accepted by the Manti-L- a Sal National Forest, 599 West Price River Drive, Price, Utah 84501 , until 4:30 PM on November 2, 1 998.
