Show 4A Emery County Progress Tuesday, April 2, 1991 PmSPECHWE Its time to clean the neighborhood Has it come to this? A 22-year-o- to join the Emery County Chamber of Commerce and local governments in encouraging Emery County residents to look to this spring as a time to cleanup and spruce up homes, We would like ld prayer by Larry W. And spring cleanup should not be the job of local government. The job is ours every citizen of the county who has any pride at all in where he or she lives and the impressions our home The show began with me! My name was first on the little program held in the hands of the multitudes filling the squeaky chairs of the auditorium. Everyone was surely reading it at that very moment. Gad! Why did they have to put my name there? I didnt exactly volunteer for the part. But it was there. was nervous enough without kind of added pressure. It really to this having have wasnt something that could be rehearsed not like standing in front of a mirror and giving a speech on freedom or standing in front of a sibling and uttering Hamlets first soliloquy. No, this was a prayer, and a graduation prayer at I Still was the really big show for the class of 69, and didnt want to begin the ceremony with a bad omen something that could not only put a shroud over the program but perhaps over the futures of all 113 graduates. had to do a good job, and my anxiety was evident. My concern extended to my mother who prompted me with a few suggestions. Now remember to bless such and such and be thankful for such and such... she would say. Dont leave out whats his name and whoseit... She did a good job of reminding me of what to cover. And what she inevitably did was to increase the length of a fairly modest prayer to something It When the 1457th Engineer Battalion was activated in January, we experienced an outpouring of community support for our troops and for the families. Since the war is no longer uppermost in the medi-- a s the have died down as well. Just because a cease fire has occured doesnt mean the war is over. Our troops are still on the front lines and should not be forgotten. The engineers are still in Germany doing the job they were sent to do. And, no, they are not on their way home. They were called for a year and the Army has the authority to keep them for a year. Perhaps they will be released sooner, perhaps not. As far as we, the families, are con- cerned the war rages on. I love our troops. I support the decision of Gen. Matthews and Gov. Bangerter to send the best troops in the United States to do the job. The descenters you have seen on television do not come from Company A. While they may be doing what could be done on a drill weekend; they are ful- rah-rah- verging on verbosity. I compromised, economized and eulogized. All turned out well. But lately, Ive been wondering if may have done permanent damage to someone in the audience who may have resented hearing a prayer at a graduation program. I didnt receive any nasty phone calls before the ceremony from someone threatening to blow up my basement bedroom if I persisted in praying. r received no letters made from composite swords' and letters cut from magazines calling mea Bible thumper or a zealot. None of that happened. In fact, it wasnt until the last few years that even began to wonder if I had done something that shouldnt have. Prayers are now being eschewed from graduation programs, so Im kind of feeling like my prayer is being negated. I feel like maybe I should write an apology to the class of 69 and say Im sorry for praying and I really was nervous about it but I didnt exactly volunteer for the duty. But also feel a little angry about it too. I feel like someone owes me an apology for making me feel like shouldnt have done what was expected to be done at a commencement, and for making me feel like what I did 22 years ago was in violation of someones civil rights and that my prayer may have caused someone irreparable harm. No, I didnt really want to give that prayer back in 1 969, but Im glad I did. Times change, and thats a little sad too. When it comes down to a Godless graduation ceremony, I fear we need prayer more than ever. I am sure Mrs. Wilson if you had taken the time to contemplate the real issue, the theft of the flag was not the point. The point being, (although I was never involved in war) I served that flag for two years and still do. Point in case! How many lives in the history of our country have paid for that symbol, being my flag? How many more will pay for it? Cost of the flag was never in mind! Mrs. Wilson, I hope I have justified my point in brief. Now to address your point. Yes, I have many opinions. I, however, use another vehicle to voice my opinion other than the public forum. 1 am involved in city government You ask any one of our friends (meaning yours and mine) my opinions are not always share-- d by all. I am, however, one citizen of Emery County. I want you to know: Yes I care, and yes I do think. My short responses to your letter bring me back to that flag which was lost for awhile. Without that flag neither you' nor I would be writing letters like this. Mrs. Wilson in short you can steal my car, but dont steal my flag. Thats my freedom in all areas such as speech and religion. One reason for that is the support they are receiving from the community. The National Guard is the nations oldest military force and has fought in every war since 1637. On the home front, they respond to state and local emergencies. The men and women of the guard are civilians in peace and soldiers in war. I am a National Guard wife and I am proud of my husband and of the commitment he has for the preservation of the freedoms we enjoy. I am a National Guard mother and I am proud that all three of my sons chose to join the guard. Yes, I am lonely and I am fearful of what the future holds, but I also understand the stubborn will of a guardsman and the courage it takes to make him a soldier.- - The very least I, as a wife and mother can do, is to match his courage with mine and shoulder the added responsibilities here at home.
