However, the pass fell incomplete as Emery's frustrations continued throughout the game, Braves flex muscle, depth to eliminate Emery By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor BOUNTIFUL Going into 3A playoff the quarter-fina- l game against the Braves last Friday, the Emery coaching staff was concerned about numbers. Obviously, those numbers included the final score, but in addition to that, the numbers included the size of the schools and the depth of the talent. Its usually about this point in the season where the numbers can catch up to you," Jim Jones said prior to the game. Still, the Spartans, with a school enrollment of about 600, battled the Bountiful Braves, a school twice its size, to the bitter end. The final numbers were: Braves 27, Spartans 7. The loss brought to an end a season which left the Spar Coach tans with a 1 Region 7 mark and a 3 mark overall. Emery finished second in the region and was the only Region 7 team to advance into the 4-- 8-- quarter-final- s. over. Emery never quit in the game, and held the Braves below their scoring average while keeping the game closer than experts had predicted. In fact, the team played the undefeated Braves evenly in the second half as each team scored a TD. The Spartans were pretty much stymied offensively, gaining only one first down in so-call- ed But those numbers will likely haunt Emery for some time. The Braves had nearly a' hundred players suited up for the game and went three deep into its reserve of quarterbacks before the game was 9 Lady Spartans get it together at region to qualify for state After a rather disappointing regular season, the Lady Spartans put it all together at the Region 7 volleyball tournament last week in Vernal to qualify for the state 3A tournament this week at West High School in Salt Lake City. Emery went into the region meet as the last place seed but came away with third place to get the final qualifying spot. It is the second year in a row that Emery has qualified for state under head coach Nancy Martinez. The Lady Spartans will open at state against Spring-vill- e of Region 8 in a 2:30 p.m. game. The team will have to win one match Friday to advance into Saturdays round. Emery opened the region tournament with a match against the host school from Uintah. Emery played exceptionally and took the match in two straight games, 15-- 9 and 15-- 1. In the second match, Emery Wasatch played first-plac- e and lost in three hard-foug1 and games, That put the Lady Spartans into the match for the third seed and it came against Carbon. The two teams split during the regular season. Against Carbon, Emery lost the first game 5 but came back to win the next two, 15-- 3 In the final match and of the tournament, Emery lost to Uintah 16-- 4 and 15-This is the best we have played all year. It was a total team effort, coach Martinez said. Three weeks ago we were in last place in the region. The girls then pulled together and made the decision to go for it. Still, it wasnt until just before the game ended that Emery could get on the board. After a field goal attempt by Bountiful went wide, the Spartans got possession at their own 20 with just over three minutes left in the game. Quarterback Gus Childs then gave Emery a first down at the 31 with a keeper, and that was followed by a screen pass to Jon Skipps which picked up another first down to the Bountiful 49. Staying with the pass, Childs found Ryan Burke open on the right side, and the wide receiver gained yardage to the 39. Two plays later, Childs connected with Adam Arrington for a gain to the 23 and that came just ahead of a completion to Burke to the seven. Then with just 10 seconds left in the game, Childs found tight end Jared Butler in the end zone as the two combined for the only Emery score of the day. Despite a delay of game call on Emery, kicker Arne n kicked the PAT to round out the scoring Stray-Pederse- at 27-- 7. Bountiful showed its strength early in the game as the Braves scored on their first possession. It took 13 plays for the Braves to cover the 65 yards to paydirt, but in that drive, Bountiful never had a big play but rather relied on 4 and running plays to go with a single pass completion. With the PAT, Bountiful held a 0 lead with 6:54 left in the initial period. Emerys first drive ended three plays after it began as Bountiful fell on a Skipps fumble at the Emery 28. Four plays later the Braves scored on another run up the middle by Chris Jones. With the PAT, Bountiful was in the lead at 14-- 0 with 3:50 until the second 7-- period. After an Emery punt, Bountiful put together another drive as the second period got underway, but the Spartan defense stopped the Braves at the 13. At that point, the Braves were successful on a field goal attempt to put the score at 17-While Emery could not muster any offense in the first half, Bountiful would have 31-ya- rd 0. two more field goal attempts before the second period came to an end. However, just one was good and that was a by Jason Haslam with just three seconds left in the half. With the field goal, 41-yard- er Bountiful held a 20-- 0 advantage. The Spartans received to start the second half, and behind the running of Skipps, Emery got a first down to the 39, but then the Braves defense stopped Emery, forcing smother punt. On the second play, Emery was hit with a facemask call, putting the Braves to midfield, and seven plays later, Bountiful scored on a quarterback keeper. With the PAT, the Braves took a 27-- 0 lead with 6:48 left in the , third period. But Emery continued to battle as they began the next series at the 21. Skipps picked up 11 on a pitchout to the left and then rambled to the 36 on a run off tackle to the right. A screen pass was successful to the Bountiful 45, and two plays later, a pass to Arrington was good to the Bountiful 14. Two plays later the drive came to an end on an interception by Kory Anderson which was returned to the Bountiful 32. As the final period got underway, Emery finally got a break of its own when Burke recovered a fumble two plays later at the Bountiful 33. From there, Emery moved to the 18 but faced a fourth and eight. Stray-Pederse- was n called on for the field goal attempt but his kick was wide. Bountifuls next drive burned a lot of time but never really went anywhere. A sack by Mike Cole set up a punt which gave Emery possession at the Emery 20. At that point, the Spartans were looking deep but came up empty as Childs punted again. A fine defensive play by Curt Bowden kept the Braves from getting a first down, but Bountiful did get within field goal range. When the kick was off, Emery got possession for its final drive which led to its only score of the game. With the loss, Emery was eliminated from the tourna- ment while Bountiful advanced into the semi-finanext week against Pine Crest In the other semi-fingame, Spanish Fork will challenge Bear River. ls al |
