The academy is open to Utah high school students entering 11th and 12th grades who demonstate excellence through academics, leadership, extracurricular activity, personal achievement and community service. The academy recognizes the quality and caliber of Utahs most valuable resource, its students, Garrido said. Participants have already demonstrated their potential for success. Activities are planned with that in mind, from distinguished lectures by prominent Utahns to an academic curriculum that focuses on personal excellence, success through example and a general collegiate orientation. Facing imperfection requires self esteem A simple definition of selfesteem is the courage to be imperfect. is a key factor Self-estee-m in learning, loving and maturing. It is a sign of mental health. Lack of is a danger signal. Jay Schvaneveldt, department head and professor of family and human development at Utah State University, said children without selfesteem often turn their attention to mischief. A common trait among school dropouts is their lack of This attitude is so thoroughly rooted in these young peoples thinking that it is difficult for them to even make an attempt to succeed, he said. If children truly believe youre for them, even if youre against any specific action of theirs, and they are sure of your unqualified love, they will be more likely to cooperate with you, Schvaneveldt said. The home that promotes does so a little bit each day. Tom Lee, extension specialist in USU College of Family Life, said giving praise is important to building selfesteem. Praise may not be uplifting, however, unless it is based on a few significant principles. Lee suggests these guidelines for giving effective praise: Focus on behavior. Praise is much more effective when it focuses on behavior rather than personality. That was a big job, thanks for your help, develops a sense of cooperation. They have to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Its no big deal. It just takes five minutes to fill out a simple form at the post office, but it is important. Registration is a requirement for federal student loans, job training benefits and most federal employment. Its important for our country, too. Having a complete registration list could save six vital weeks in responding to a national emergency. So if you know a young man about to turn 18, remind him to register. Its one of those things hes got to do. Register with Selective Service. It's quick. Its easy. And its the law. A public service message k self-estee- As children get older we seem to discourage touching, but the need is still there. Many children learn to lie in order to get the touching they desire. They may say they are afraid, because then it is all right to be held until the fear passes. Or, some may say they are ill, because then touching is acceptable, she says. Children who do not receive the positive types of touching may even resort to bad behavior. That behavior may bring spanking, but any type of touching is preferable to none. Science will never replace the need to be touched, to be close to another human being. This need begins at birth and continues until death, Ashcroft says. of this publication and Selective Service System. A I ing you were good. Focused praise helps children know they have worth all the time, not just when they do well. Be specific. Praise that focuses on exactly what you appreciate is more believable than You always do so well. If praise is too general, and given haphazardly, it may seem insincere to children. They may question the value of praise from a parent who always praises this way. Schvaneveldt says parents should also beware of double standards of behavior that children may pick up on. For example, many ofus are pleasant on the telephone until we hang up the receiver. We then immediately become critical of the caller. This is double-talthat our children hear. Elaine Ashcroft, also an extension specialist in the College of Family Life, said touching is another simple way to convey affection and build 4 fighting fish will even attack its own image in a mirror. |
