Show rr.rTrarrinr.,rifB 4A Emery County Progress Tuesday, April 10, 1990 Enjoy the freedom of the desert Has it come to this ? Blowin in the wind by Larry v. Guest column Back a W. Davis V And the wind picked up Monday and with it came a gust of dismay. was working on this column, a poem of spring and of living in Emery County and of being happy about not living anywhere else, when the wind blew and the dust swept under the door and up my pantleg. The words had come so easily that morning: theres nothing years ago (I wont tell how many!), when Kathryn was in college, she had a roommate from Price. the roommate asked, Kathy, are you goin Easterin this weekend? Kathryn, who was an Idaho girl, asked, What? Are ya goin Easterin? Still not understanding what the girl meant, Kathryn answered, like few Along about this time of year I Ah thought to herself, Sounds like a strange tradition to me. By MONTELL SEELY the sun above the Emery home guess brown; Well, Im going to Caldwell, Idaho, so I I wont be going east. The roommate explained, Theres nothing like the alkali that goes from town the Easter weekend everybody goes Easterin. We go out on the desert and go Easterin. Kathryn smiled and nodded as if she understood, but she Down home, on to town. Where else can you sit at home and hear the coyotes call? Thats surely something you wont hear at the Orem A few years later I brought Kathryn home to Castle Valley as my new bride, and we joined the hegira into the desert and went Easterin! I taught her how to have a desert picnic and roll Easter eggs. Y es , this weekend there will be a mass hegira into our wilderness to enjoy family out- ings. There will be the old folks with their canes and walkers, the suckling babes with their paper diapers, a few will be in wheelchairs. The whole family of aunts, uncles and cousins will be there with campers and motorhomes of every description. The young folks will climb around in the ledges while the old folks fret and worry. The ants and all manner of endangered bugs will have a feast on the leftovers, and the far side of lots of cedar trees will get fertilized. You had best enjoy it while you can, because if Wayne Owens and his cronies have their way, such desecration of the environment will screech to a sudden stop. Thud. The radical element of our Environmental Society would like to stop this type of use of our wilderness, and they may go to extreme actions; so beware of bodies lying across the road; dont leave your vehicle unattended it might get torched; and dont let your children roam free in a remote canyon some cows got shot. A word to the wise : Clean up your campground! Leave it cleaner than a hounds tooth. Dont leave any litter of any kind. If it will bum, then bum it, but cover up the evidence with red sand. If it wont bum, carry it home. Do not try to bury cans and bottles; ihe coyotes come along with their keen sense ofsmell and uncover all such burials. Those honorable and endangered pets of the radical environmentalists make a mess of ycur dead-ca- n burial grave, and you get the blame for littering! This weekend, enjoy the freedom to drive into our wilderness. Enjoy the freedom to go where you choose and select a convenient campground. Enjoy being free from the harassment of government camp inspectors. Enjoy being in our wilderness while it is managed under the multiple use concept. If we dont stop Wayne Owens and his cronies, we wont have these freedoms much longer. children in your care.
