A total of 4,000 students from elementary, junior high and high schools across the state will be honored at the Utah Symphony Concert. One thousand adult representatives of the Utah State PTA will accompany the honored students to the commemorative concert. Joseph Silverstein, Utah Symphony musical director since 1983, will conduct the concert. In the unusual position of being an acclaimed violinist and superb conductor, Maestro Silverstein has appeared as soloist andor conductor with virtually every major orchestra in this country and abroad. A native of Detroit, his first music teacher was his father, who was a music instructor in Detroits public school system. Expected to speak to the students in a brief program in the Tabernacle before the concert is the Right Honorable Edward Heath, former prime minister of Great Britain, who was selected as Britains No. 1 parliamentarian in 1988. Mr. Heath will conduct the Utah Symphony May 11, 1990, in a concert at Symphony Hall, as a part of the 50th Anniversary Gala Celebration. He has conducted some of the great symphonies of the world, including the National Symphony of the Republic of China in Bejing, the Jerusalem Symphony, and, in the United States, the Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland symphony orchestras. Mr. Heath was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, as saying, I think politics would be infinitely better off if politicians cared about music and the arts. If you do nothing but politics, you drive yourself into the ground. ..Balance is to life. The Utah Symphony presents concerts for school children across the state every school year. In the 1988-8year, 51 performances were nt 9 given by the orchestra to some 65,000 students throughout the state. The symphonys first performance was on May 8, 1940, in Kingsbury Hall on the University ofUtah campus, under the baton of Hans Heniot. Maurice Abravanel directed the Utah Symphony for 32 years, and is credited with guiding it from relative obscurity to national and international tours across Europe, the British Isles, the Caribbean, South America and Central America. In 1986 the Utah Symphony performed its 5,000th concert and released its 125th recording. The names of all students selected to attend this concert will be published on an honor list in a beautifully produced commemorative program book. The Utah State PTA will provide participation awards. Emery High School students are participating in this event through the Emery Council PTA allotment because there is no PTA or PTSA organized at the high school. Anyone interested in getting a PTSA organized at the high school could contact g Council PTA Presi3 dent Zelda Rojas at with names of people who may be able to help.
