For example, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. will soon release a compact disc that features Wilbergs Three Scottish Folksongs recorded by the Vancouver Chamber Choir. In April, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will record his lively arrangement of the American folksong Cindy on an album of American music for the Philips label. These two pieces, plus the recently completed third movement from the work, premiered Friday, March 16, when Wilberg conducted the BYU Concert Choir in its spring concert. Wilberg has more than a dozen choral works published by Hinshaw being performed by university and college choirs around the country, as well as a pair of childrens piano duet albums, one of which was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association and the Utah Music Teachers Association. He also recently finished a choral work for Bridges of Song Song, the East-WeFestival scheduled for Estoni-a- , USSR, in July 1991. The festival will feature 20,000 singers from the United States and the Soviet Union. Wilbergs work, Anthem of incorporates an Estonian folksong, The Power of Song, melded with an American spiritual, We Shall Walk Together in the Valley of Peace, Peace. Not all of Wilbergs works are in circulation, because he arranges a lot for his own choirs at BYU, I usually only release the things that show my best work, he said. Wilbergs many appointments in the music department, where hes an assistant professor, include teaching, conducting and choral litera- ture; directing the Mens Chorus and Concert Choir; and directing the choral program, which involves about 800 students every semester. Hes a member of the Haydn to see that they were greatly influenced by folk music. Although his published Stripes Forever published by Kjos, Wilberg admits his output is mostly in choral music. I obviously love the medium, he smiled. Composing, it appears, is something Wilberg was bom to. As a child growing up in rural Castle Dale, Wilberg began playing piano by ear at age 4. At 13, he won the national PTA Reflections competition with a piece called Emery County Suite. At BYU he graduated with a double major in piano perfor are deteraccompaniment mined by the group commissioning the piece, and you could have some fairly sizeable constraints on creativity. But Wilberg doesnt see it that way. You always have to create within constraints, he said, noting that sometimes the late hours and the deadlines actually open the creative juices. He does, however, admit to becoming occasionally discouraged with his heavy schedule. You always have doubts about your abilities as a composer, he says. But one of the most gratifying aspects is to have university, college, festi- val, and church all-sta- te choirs across the country, led by musicians I respect, per- forming my works. I dont write popular music as such. I like to write music that will hopefully communicate on the first hearing, he said. People wont come to concerts if they dont understand whats going on. With such a schedule, its not surprising that Wilberg finds himself doing most of his composition work from about 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. at a piano in the basement of his Provo home. Add to those hours the fact that much of his writing is done on deadline and that many times the parameters of the work the text, the size of the chorus , the (Continued from Page 1A) First the ash pan must be emptied and placed under the soot opening, removing the cover, of course. Montell explained that it was made heavy to keep from tipping over on the sheepherders table, which did double duty as a bed. The tables canvas covering and oil cloth worked very well unless one moved a lot. The leg of lamb used for stews and fries would be wrapped and put under the mattress during the day. At night the meat would be hung in a tree to chill. Montell said while going to BYU he used to hang meat outside his window early in the morning. Some of the coeds were shocked. Actually pioneers lacked refrigeration and had to use simpler methods. The meat was usually used up fast, though. He showed a h hook hammered out by a blacksmith on an anvil.
