Show 6A Emery County Progress Tuesday, April 3, 1990 POETS Emery nine goes at Mesquite 3-- 2 By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor MESQUITE, Nev. A series of weird events in the final inning of the semi-fingame between Emery and Uintah at the Cactus Classic Baseball Tournament pulled a n victory out of the hands of the Spartans to give the Utes a championship appearance on the final day of the competition. Emery was one out away from taking a 1 win over Uintah in the big school division semi-fingame, but the Utes scored twice in the bottom of the inning to claim a 2 win, sending the Spartans home with a tournament al near-certai- 2-- al 3-- 3-- 2 record. Emerys Bobby Fossat came in to relieve starter Steven in the final inning after Gordon had pitched his team to a 1 lead. Fossat breezed through the first two batters, striking out the first and then getting the second to pop up in the infield. Then the game simply turned whacky. Fossat struck Gordon 2-- out the next Uintah batter on three pitches, seemingly giving Emery the win. But the batter swung at a breaking ' ball in the dirt which catcher Lyle Everett was unable to locate. The batter reached first base on the wild pitch. The next batter up singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. But Fossat battled back to strike out the next Ute hitter, but again the third strike was in the dirt. This time Everett recovered the ball and threw to first, but first baseman Greg Jewkes lost the ball in the sun and the runner was safe, while the tying run crossed the plate and the potential winning run advanced to third. The next batter up hit an slow roller to second baseman Duane Pearson, who got to the ball but threw wide to Jewkes at first. The throwing error allowed the winning run to score as Emery lost Losing like that leaves you with an empty feeling, coach Jim Jones said after the game. It looked like we had it won when some strange things 3-- 2. happened. It wasnt really anyones fault; it was just weird. Emery had advanced into the semi-fingame after pounding Mountain View, a 4A school from Orem, 21-- 2 earlier in the day. Prior to the action on Saturday, the Spartans competed in pool play, where they opened on Thursday afternoon with a 0 win over Lehi. On Friday, Emery lost to Page, Ariz., but bounced back to defeat Boulder City, Nev., That gave 1 record and a a pool Emery tie for first place going into the tournament seeding. Playing at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday proved to the liking of the Spartans as they pounded the Orem school for 21 runs al 1-- 3-- 2, 7-- 5. 3-- on 13 hits in just three innings. Gordon pitched two innings to claim the win while Gus Childs came'in to put the lid on the win in the third. Gordon also had a good day with the bat as he finished with three hits, including a Taking a throw at third base is Emerys Bobby Fossat as a Mountain View baserunner slides into the bag The tag was late, . triple, while knocking in five runs and scoring four times himself. Fossat was three for three with a double and four RBI. Emery scored six runs in the first inning, one in the second and 14 in the third for the win. The Bruins scored twice in the first inning but were never a threat as Gordon and Childs held them to four hits. Against Uintah, however, Emerys bats werent as lively. The Spartans opened the scoring when Cody Allred singled in the top of the first, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. That was the only Emery run until the top of the fifth. In that inning, Rob Wagoner singled to left and then stole second. On the steal, the senior twisted an ankle and was replaced by Jared Butler. The junior reached third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Allred. That run gave Emery a lead as Fossat took the mound in the bottom of the fifth. Tournament rules called for each game to go no more than five innings. Uintah had tied the game in the bottom of the first, but Gordon shut the Utes out through the second, third and fourth innings. Emery had just three hits in the game, but good pitching and solid defense kept the Spartans on top until the rally by Uintah in the final inning. 2-- 1 To open the tournament, Emery faced the Lehi Pioneers, a team which defeated the Spartans., three times in 1989. This year the Spartans turned things around despite an outstanding pitching effort by Lehis Robert Calton. Childs, who earlier relieved starter Brodie Barnes, then shut out Boulder City in the fourth and fifth to give Emery the win. An equally spectacular pitching performance was turned in by Gordon, who didnt give up a run to the Pioneers, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Emery could get nothing going offensively until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Gordon stroked a single to right. Allred then came in to pinch-ruand he went to second on a wild pitch. With two out, Fossat drew a walk, and with Lyle Everett at bat, the Lehi catcher threw to first on a pickoff play. However, the throw was off the mark and went into right field as Allred and Fossat advanced.- f Allred was signaled home by coach Jones at third, and the baserunner scored when the throw from the outfield got by the catcher. That gave Emery the 0 lead, and that proved to be all the scoring.
