The matches begin at 4 p.m. with sophomore action. before the game with Dixie that the Flyers have one of the most complete teams in 3A competition and added that the Dixie backfield is among the best Emery has come up against in his coaching career. That all proved to be true in the Spartan home opener last week. Defense dominated early in the game, but Emerys offense struck for two scores in the second period to take a 14-- 0 lead. However, Dixie scored just before the half to cut the lead to 14-- and then came out in the second half to and tie the game at then score late in the game to get the win. In the first period, Emerys initial drive was stopped on a Dixie interception, but the Spartans stopped the first Dixie drive on a quarterback sack. Then early in the second period, Emery held the Flyers, forcing a punt. Emery then drove to the Dixie 26 when running back Lyle Everett took a hand-of- f off tackle to the left, broke to the outside and scampered into the end zone for the games first score. The PAT kick by Gus Childs was blocked, but Emery held a 0 lead at the 10:17 mark of the second period. On Emerys next possession, quarterback Ryan Stilson went deep to wide receiver Steven Gordon along the right sideline. Stilsons pass caught Gordon in stride, and the senior broke to his left, ran across the field and then broke upfield and into the end zone at the 6:07 mark of the period. Emery used a fake kick on the PAT, and instead, Chris Wilson, the holder, took the ball, 7, 14-1- 4, 6-- Emery to host region opponent Uintah '"1 By LARRY W. Dixie used a pass completion to move to the Emery 24, and then kept the ball on the ground to get to the Emery one, first and goal. At 0. 25-ya- rd that point, quarterback Tom Brown scored on a sneak, and the PAT kick made the score 14-- 7 with 1:57 to go in the first half. The second half opened with the exchange of several punts through the third period, but on Dixies first possession of the fourth period, things changed. An Emery punt gave the Flyers the ball at the Dixie 44. On the first play of the fourth period, Jason Nelson sacked the Dixie QB for no gain, but two plays later, Brown rolled right on an option, kept the ball, broke upfield and scored run. The PAT on a to kick was good tie the score at 4 with 10:20 to play. Emerys offense sputtered on its next possession when a Stilson pass intended for Cody Allred was intercepted by Derek Booth and returned to the Emery 35. Dixie moved to the Emery 20, but on third down Wilson made a great defensive play to knock down a Brown pass. That put the Flyers in a fourth and 11 situation at the 20, and they set up in field goal position. However, the Flyers faked the field goal, and instead, Brown rolled to the right and passed to Booth who made a leaping catch in the end zone for the TD at the 6:26 mark. A strong rush by Emery resulted in a block of the PAT kick, leaving the score at 20-1- 4 for the visitors. Emery still had an opportunity to score. On its next possession, Emery moved from its own 32 to midfield before being stopped on downs with just over three minutes to play. But the Spartans stopped Dixie at the Emery 24 and took possession with a minute left in the contest. However, the game came to an end when Dixies Nate Goodrich intercepted a Stilson pass deep in Flyer territory. 65-ya- rd 14-1- Progress editor Depending on which poll read, Dixie High School was the No. 1 ranked team in 3A last week coming into its game with Emery. However, the coach pointed out that the course is more difficult than the one the team scored 420 on the week before. The meet was held on the Mountain Course and the Canyon Course of the 4. Spartans? Coach Jim Jones said early this week that the team has taken the loss well. They had three big plays in the game, and we had two. That was the difference. Dixie came into the game with two wins against 3A tri-cour- se at Wasatch Moun- tain State Park. Leading scorer for Emery was Bo Shortt with a 48 and 52 for a 100 total.
