Also, he said that to reduce expenses in bringing these speaker to Emery school dislocal the County, trict is looking at combining opening programs with the Carbon School District. A motion to allow thesuper-tenden- t to set the dates was approved although there is to he no significant change in starting dates from what has traditionally been set in the district in the past. In other discussion, the superintendent said that officials of the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification recently made a pi esentation on the hiring of teachers. Dr. Weeks said that the emphasis of the presentation was conducting a search into the background of applicants to see if any criminal history exists. He said that the bureau would give the district a check into the applicant Utah history for $10. The applicant would have to be fingerprinted. Dr. Weeks said that the Alpine School District is currently following such a policy, and that district policy i being studied for local trict did not plan to drop the eighth grade program, it would have a difficult time finding competition outside of adoption Board President Wes Curtis said that such a policy would take care of a lot of the districts liability problems, and board member Phil Nelson recommened that the matter be tabled until the superintendent has a chance to prepare a policy for the Emery District. Alo discussed at the meeting was the matter of eighth grade athletics. Earlier, the superintendent reported that the Carbon School District w a dropping the eighth grade program from competitive ports. As a result, he suggested that while Emery Dis back-gioun- d the county. Ray Guymon of Huntington was at the meeting and told the board that he would like to see the district continue to field eighth grade programs. Dr. Weeks said that the policy in the Emery District is that eighth graders are still permitted to try out for teams and can be used as part of the ninth grade teams. Canyon View Principal Bob Swinburne said that the elimination of the eighth grade teams would affect JV basket- - These Dang Burn Prices are so low but would not preclude eighth graders from participating. CV coach Bill Wright said that he would hate to see JV programs eliminated because marginal ninth grade athletes would be hurt since room on the varsity would have to be made for the top eighth grade athletes. He also pointed out that junior high is the last chance many kids have to compete on school teams. Mr. Curtis suggested that eighth grade teams could still ball and JV volleyball compete in the county between Canyon View and San Rafael. In the end, board member Kathy Cannon made the motion that Dr. Weeks meet with Carbon County School District officials to see if there is some way to save the eighth grade program. Her motion passed unanimously. other athletic-relate- d matters, the hoard approved the appointment of Bill In Wright as hoys head football and head basketball coach at Canyon View while he was asked to recommend his assistants. They will he named at a later date. Mr. Wright is replacing Tom Baltzer who resigned his position. The hoard also named Duane Merrell as the head girls basketball coach at Emery High and named Nancy Martinez as his assistant. Also approved was the appointment of Kent Bunder-soas an assistant coach in the boys basketball program at Emery High. Coach earlier resigned as head coach of girls volleyball and basketball.
