Show Wakefield 12-Eagles in no-lii- ts By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor Pitcher Travis Wakefield hurled a against the Millard Eagles while helping himself with the bat last Friday as the Spartans took a 12-- 0 win in Region 10 play. Emery is now tied with several teams in the conference for first place, including Millard, with a 1 league mark. The win also put Emery at 4 on the season. This week the Spartans no-hitt- er 3-- 9-- host Manti Tuesday in another important league game. The next conference game will not be until April 25 when the team travels to North Sanpete. Todays game will begin at 3 p.m. Wakefield, a senior, was nearly perfect in his outing against Millard. Through six innings he allowed no runs, no hits, struck out six and only walked two. Just four Millard batters reached base, and only one of those base runners got win 0 beyond first base. Emerys defense was solid throughout the game as well. The Spartans committed just three errors. In that inning, the Spartans got five runs to put the game on ice. With one out, Bobby Fossat and Cody Allred got singles. The two then scored on a double by Steven Gordon. Then came Butlers homer, but Emery still wasnt through scoring. Wakefield singled, and his pinch runner, Ryan Stilson, scored on a double by Gagon, his second of the game. By the end of the fourth, Emery held a comfortable 0 lead. Although the Spartans did not score in the fifth, the sixth proved to be another productive inning for the home team. Gordon opened with a single, and Butler reached base on 3-- 0 4-- back-to-bac- 0 k 2-r- 9-- his third hit of the day. The Spartans recorded 13 first place finishes while dominating nearly every event. Shot put- - David Turner, first. joining with teammates in winning the 1600 relay at the Richfield Invitational Track Meet Saturday, April 15. Twenty-seve- n schools participated. The junior placed first in the 3200 meter, setting a new school record with a time of 10:23.70. That broke the old record by 11 seconds. Wilson also was first in the 1600 meter and joined Shane Gentry, Jeff Guymon and Brandon Sanchez in winning the 1600 meter relay. Emery also got a first place from senior David Turner in the shot put, but the four firsts were not enoungh to overcome a talented track team from Hurricane which won the meet with 90 points. Emery finished second with 86.5 points. In other events at the invitational, Kray Arnold was fifth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. Cody Allred placed sixth in the 100. Brandon Sanchez was fifth in the 400. Wilson also placed second in the 800. Emerys 400 relay team of Cody Allred, Wes Morris, Brandon Sanchez and Kray Arnold finished third while the 1600 medley relay team of Wes Morris, Chris McCourt, Brent Cook and Travis Hess I Taking the lead in the hurdles are Emerys Shannon Beard, right, and Kerrilyn Olsen, left. Beard won the event and was one of nine to took fifth. In the field events, Russ Wilstead took fourth and Wes Fish fifth in the high jump while Casey Allred was second in the pole vault. Turner was third in the discus, and Lynn Tuttle came in fourth in the javelin. In the girls competition, Paige Funk placed fourth in the 400, and third place finishes went to Kristi Staker in the discus and Trista Lake in the shot put. The 400 meter relay team of Melissa Arrington, Melinda Arrington, Paige Funk and Ted Ann Farmer took third.
