Show Emery County Progress Tuesday, December 6, 1988 5B EDUCATION Committee helps district abuse programs the Under direction of supervisor Roma N. Powell, a Drug and Alcohol Committee is functioning in the Emery School District. This committee is districts with the effort to implement substance helping on-goi- effective abuse prevention programs in the education schools. In a meeting held Dec. 1 at the district office, a report was made on the successes of the Emery Districts participation National Red Ribbon in the Week. The school lunch workers participated by doing special Red Ribbon Menus. Steve Stream of the sheriffs office, and Emery Jones of Four Corners Mental Health and Mr. McGruff visited all of the schools elementary and distributed red ribbons with the Drug-Fre- e America message to all students. Ted Wilson, Democratic candidate for governor, visited the Castle Dale and Ferron elementaries. Ferron Elementary held a school-wid- e red balloon launch. Under the direction of Deanna Mechamn, a haunted house was decorated and many of the Peer Helpers from Canyon View Junior High School participated in October. The San Rafael Junior High School had guest speakers. The decorating of grocery sacks with students drug-fre- proved messages e successful and was under the direction of Carla Arrington. City councils and mayors signed en- proclamations couraging all citizens to take the pledge: The Choice For Me, Drug-FreChurches also Red joined by celebrating Ribbon Sabbath. Red ribbon T- e! shirts and sweatshirts with that same message were distributed to all administrators by Mrs. Powell, and the members of the district staff wore these shirts throughout the week as they circulated throughout the district. Shirts were also distributed by Mr. Jones to all members of the Drug and Alcohol Committee and to Peer Helpers as they presented programs throughout the district. Mr. Jones and Mrs. Powell met with all PTA workers and distributed ribbons and the musical score and tape for I Emery County High School to stay 2A (Continued from Page 1A) schools shows that the local school is against Juab, against Manti, against 14-- 8-- 7-- and Millard, against 9-- Richfield in football since 1971. In girls basketball since 1980, the record is 0 against Juab, 5 against Richfield, 1 against Millard, 4 against Manti, and 2 against Carbon. In football, the record shows 4-- 4-- 2-- 3-- 3-- the Emery is 6 against Richfield, 2 against Manti, 3 against Millard and 0 against Juab since 1980. It was also suggested that the proposed realignment would remove three teams (Emery, Union and Lehi) from 2A 2-- 4-- 4-- 5-- forensics competition and only one team (Beaver) would move into 2A. The question asked was: Will 2A forensic competition drop below the UHSAA requirement for 50 percent of the schools to participate to maintain the competition as a sanctioned activity? Also addressed in the meeting was the rural vs. urban setting. The 'presentation noted that Emery High draws its 546 students from nine small This characcommunities. is a enrollment where teristic, small of numerous composition communities seems to be common among rural schools in the 2A classificiation. Its not characteristic of schools in the 3A classification. These schools have an urban setting not characteristic of Emery High. Rural communities live and die with the success or failure of the local high school teams. It is the primary form of entertainment in Emery County. It is our means of identity. The 3 A schools have a great interest in the local high school team, but there are other forms of entertainment and other ways to gain that identity. The UHSAAs handbook lists 15 athletic or activity areas in which schools compete. Emery High doesnt even field teams in six of those 15 areas. We would be one of the few 3A teams without teams in cross country, soccer, golf, gymnastics, swimming and tennis. the We dont have enrollment necessary to field teams nor available the personnel to provide coaches. and we also lack the facilities for such activities. Also considered was the effect a change would have on motivation. Dr. Weeks and Mr. Arnold said, The most prominent and common component of successful schools is a motivated teaching staff, and thus a motivated student body. Motivation is an intrinsic drive toward the fulfillment of personal needs and the improvement of ones perceived status. It is influenced strongly by extrinsic factors such as personal values, past achievements, important people in the individuals life, and emotional experiences. In practice, the highly motivated individual is a goal setter and goal achiever. significant Motivation is the key to a successful school. It is the difference between achieving students and unachieving students; good and poor teachers; effective and ineffective administrators; and ultimately it makes the difference between successful and unsuccessful school programs. motivation Where exists, growth occurs. Where growth occurs there are happy and fulfilled people. Motivation, goal achievement and growth are habit forming and they enhance Certainly, a priority goal of education is the motivation of students to achieve and to enjoy the resultant enhancement of The one personal factor most consistently found in direct correlation with school achievement is The proposed realignment is from school years 1989-9- 3 since the UHSAA makes changes only every four years. It has listed for 1A enrollment at 2A 0 for schools, schools, for 3A and 4A schools. This classification is not absolute, however, and takes into self-conce- self-conce- self-conce- 176-55- 551-1,1- 19 consideration Mr. The for proposal con- sideration by the Legislative Council calls for Emery to be in the 2A ranks with 19 other teams in the state. The 2A division has the fewest schools. Emery is listed in Region 10 which will have 11 schools. Mr. Arnold said that the region will be divided into two conferences. Tentatively, Emery is listed with Beaver (up from 1A), Hurricane Millard, Manti, North Sevier (up from 1A), North Sanpete, Juab and Gunnison (up from 1A). 9, Mon-ticell- Monument independent), (previously Kanab (previously 1A), South Sevier and Richfield. This song was also featured at the Cleveland Elementary School dedication program. Mrs. Powell and Mr. Jones congratulated all of the Drug and Alcohol Committee members for the tremendous effort put forth on the Red Ribbon Week activities. The production of the musical Its My Life was play, presented at the Canyon View and San Rafael junior high schools. It was also presented at the Emery County High School on Nov. 30. The committee recognized Mr. Jones for his effort in seeing that this most successful play was produced. The play will be presented at Carbon High School on Dec. 16. The scripts, scores and accompaniment tapes will be used now at Green River High School. center in the district. The Magic Touch approach to the problems mentioned above is positive and simple, Mrs. Powell said, adding that Merlin Olsens clear and believable narrations are followed by catchy songs that give positive reinforcement. Jones and Mrs. Powell reported that all elementary teachers and junior and senior high school health teachers in the Emery District have been given the opportunity to receive training in the implementation of the 2 Alcohol, Drug and Tobacco Prevention Education Program. This training was under the direction of Mr. Jones and Mrs. Powell. The committee expressed appreciation to Deanna Mecham and Chris Stucki for the hours that each contributed at these training sessions. Mrs. Powell has compiled a list of books that can be purchased on for each of the libraries with drug and alcohol grant monies. These titles are to be reviewed now by the media personnel along with the Olsen video. This seminar was originally scheduled for Jan. 27, and 28, 1989. However, Feb. 17, 1989 is now being considered as a possible date for this seminar. The committee gave Mrs. Powell approval to purchase a copy of The Magic Touch, a program designed to help educators solve three common problems in todays schools: foul language, unkindness and lack of respect for adult authority.
