All persons having claims against the above estate are required to present them to the undersigned or to the Clerk of the Court on or before the 24th day of February, 1989, or said claims shall be forever barred. Linda White ' Emery Star Rt. Huntington, Utah 84528 Attorney for Personal Representative: Toys are given to bring joy to all ages. Unfortunately, about 125,000 children are injured each year children in toy-relat- ed of accidents. Many accidents could be avoided if parents become better shoppers. Toy safety is important but especially during the Christmas season when 60 percent of all toys are purchased. The major cause of accidents year-roun- d, is when toys designed for older children fall into the hands of younger children, The toy in- dustry and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) do a good job of testing and labeling toys, but that doesnt do much good if parents dont read labels. Most injuries and deaths occur when young children swallow pieces of toys designed for older children. For example, since 1987, a regulation has required a minimum size for baby pacifiers and rattles. Before then, many children choked on rattles small enough to lodge in their throats. Another danger area identified by CPSC is toy chests. Many injuries and deaths oc curred when young children were caught under the falling lids of toy chests. The CPSC recommends storing childrens toys on shelves or in toy chests with lids that lock in the open positron., ; Consider these guidelineswhen buying toys: Read labels: Look for these nontoxic, important words, flame retardant, flame resistant, washable hygienic material for stuffed toys, and U.L. approved for electronic toys. Right toy for the right age: Toy labels usually give information on the age group the toy is designed for, but these are only guidelines. Consider the abilities of each child. Proper storage: many accidents occur when toys arent put away. Adults can fall on them or younger siblings can get hold of a toy not intended for them. Make sure each toy has a safe place for storage. Dont add on: Never hang toys on long strings or cords that infants might become entangled in. Keeping toys charged Watches that talk, robots that EMERY HIGH SCHOOL walk and games that light up and go buzz all feed on a common diet batteries. The cost of feeding these electronic marvels may exceed the cost of the product. For - instance, a walkman-typ- e stereo played an hour a day might use $50 to $75 worth of batteries a year. Not all batteries are created equal, so price is not the only guideline batteries. when shopping for Consider different types: -Ca-rbon-zinc: These are the standard flashlight batteries that have been around for nearly 100 years. Their main advantage is low cost. They dont last long and when they run out of power they may leak corrosive acid. Most electronic toys, especially those with motors, will run only two hours on carbon-zin- c batteries. Alkalines: They often cost twice as much as carbon-zin- c batteries, but they last more than twice as long. For example, an electric toy car that will run for an hour on carbon-zin- c will probably run four to five hours on alkalines. Another advantage of alkalines is longer shelf life and no acid to leak on toys or equipment. Button cells: A variety of miniature electronic devices now require miniature bat- teries. These cells button come in mercury, silver oxide and lithium. The lithium batteries generally last longest, and recent mass production of them has brought the price down. Dont leave button cells lying around the house. Serious illness or death can result if they are swallowed. Players of the Week Rechargeable batteries: rechargeable batteries may be the ultimate solution to battery costs, Nickel-cadmiu- RyanStilson Marcy Barnes Players of the Week at Emery High are Marcy Barnes, Ryan Stilson and Chris McCourt. Marcy was selected based on her performance against Carbon, South Sevier and Duchesne. In those games she combined for 32 points, played excellent defense and worked very hard. Ryan had good games at South Sevier and Carbon for the boys basketball Chris McCourt team where he scored 10 and five points respectively. He ignited the team early in both games with his outside shooting. Chris took first place at the Layton Wrestling Tournament in the 171-ldivision with a 0 b. 4-- record. The senior also had a win over his Carbon opponent in a dual match earlier in the week. m especially for those with two or more electronic devices in constant use. The initial cost is high, about $6 for two batteries and $12 for the recharger, but the batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times over four years. Try to buy batteries from a store that does a brisk business. Batteries lose their power sitting on the shelf. Also, the type of battery is usually more important than the brand. That is, alkalines will always perform batbetter than carbon-zin- c teries regardless of brand name. Apparently, the multimillionaire controls just about everything in his moviemaking business except the toylicensing rights. He is further quoted as saying his movies were never meant for little kids and that he -- tried to stop the marketing of Rambo toys. The National Coalition on Television Violence (NCTV) is less concerned with who is to blame than with the increase in TV violence in general. Violence in cartoons and the toys associated with the cartoons has increased sales of war toys 700 percent since 1982. Although some critics place much of the blame for war toys on the Rambo Stallone movies, the NCTV is less specific. War-relat- well. Toy companies define enemies as someone different, such as a different nationality or color, or from a different planet. She says the stakes in cartoon wars are higher. Entire planets are being blown up and wars are being fought for control of the universe. Stakes are also high for mastery of the marketplace. NCTV statistics show 11 of the 20 Stewart's Thriftway Castle Dale Actor-produc- er Sylvester Stallone has been quoted as saying he wouldnt buy Rambo toys for his own kids. best-sellin- g NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Christmas safety tips A normally safe fireplace can become a fire hazard during the holidays.
