Faced with several years of decline in the Pacific Flyway waterfowl populations and recent drought conditions, the board approved a restricted duck season, reducing the hunt to 58 days. previous The board took special note of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommendation to reduce the limit and adopted a four daily and eight in possession bird limit. There can be no more than three mallards, only one can be a hen, two redheads and no canvasback. At 79-d- ay Also under the federal recommendations, hunters can hunt pintail for only three weeks the first week and the last two weeks of the season. During this period, only one pintail can be taken, a drake or hen, the first week, and only two drakes, the last two weeks. The final frameworks will be adopted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in early September. Because of the delay in the federal adoption process, Utah Waterfowl the 1988-8- 9 Proclamation will not be available until late September. The swan and goose season run concurrently this year and were set for Oct. 8 through Jan. 1. The application period for the 2,500 swan permits is Aug. 29 to Sept. 9. In addition, the board also cougar, approved the 1938-89 bear and furbearer proclamation without any significant changes except to open Morgan County to cougar and bear hunting. Cougar, bear and furbearer proclamations will be available at all DWR offices and most sporting goods stores by Sept. 19. In special action, the board rescinded the sandhill crane hunts for this year so that concerned individuals and groups can become involved in the states crane management plan. The board also rescinded the pheasant hunt in Utah County from three days to 14 days. Division of Wildlife Resources will be accepting applications for the 2,500 swan permits from Aug. 29 through The Sept. 9. Tundra swan productions in Alaska this year is near average and the fall flight is expected to be similar to last years. The daily bag and possession limit is one for holders of a swan permit. Riparian habitat, or life zones surrounding rivers, lakes and ponds, will be the subject of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources exhibit at this years Utah State Fair slated for Sept. in Salt Lake City. The exhibit, housed in DWRs building on the fairgrounds, will feature live fish native to Utah and a variety of displays aimed at educating and entertaining fair visitors. More than 100,000 people annually visit the wildlife building, traditionally one of the most popular exhibits at the fair. After opening ceremonies Thursday afternoon on Sept. 8, the exhibit will be open to the public throughout the fair from 0 a.m. to 10 p.m. 8-- Probably the most overlooked game species in the Utah Fishing Proclamation is the crayfish, called sometimes crawdad or fresh water lobster. Crayfish are a delicacy in Europe and a mainstay in Cajun cooking. Most restaurants in New Orleans list crayfish at least once on their menus. Raising and catching crayfish for market is a major industry along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, especially in Louisiana. But crayfish are virtually unknown to Utahns.
