Show 4 RV Show Edition, May, 1985 Tent buyers: Know your needs e The tent buyer may be bewildered at the variety of tents on the market, but a little research will narrow the choices. Camp shelter is very important, A buyer should visit more than one outdoor outfitter's store to get an idea of the styles and sizes of tents available. Look for a dealer who has a tent city set up for inspection. If not, most store owners will set up a tent for an interested buyer. Check the size Coleman camping advisers recommend a buyer step inside the tent to get the feel of it and judge whether the size is right for the family. Talk to neighbors and friends about their choices,' but keep in mind that your family may have si ight ly different needs to consider. Make a checklist of features you see in different tents to help in your decision, says Katie McMullen of the Coleman Company. Consider size, weight, ventilation, ease of assembly and types of camping you plan to do. If you will be setting up a tent for two weeks in one place, youll want lots of space. But if you plan to move every day or two, you may want to sacrifice space for ease of assembly. If you use a camping trailer or recreational vehicle, you may need a tent that stores compactly for occasional visitors who first-tim- travel with you. Styles vary from the standard cabin tents to modified dome and regular dome structures. The latter are becoming particularly popular among campers. They are usually made of nylon and come with fiberglass pole sections linked with elastic cord for easy assem They snap together quickly into two or three long poles that easily bend to form the arch of the dome. bly. Stake them down Nylon tents require an outer waterproof fly to keep out the rain. These are quickly attached over the frame and hooked in place. While dome tents are freestanding and can be moved around after they are set up, it is best to stake them down because strong winds can roll them over, especially when empty. Many families with teenagers elect to use two tents. Each person requires enough space for a sleeping bag and personal gear, so its best to allow for extra room. Cabin tents offer the most space for long-terstays, but take a little longer to set up. Practice in the backyard before you take off on your first trip. Follow the manufacturers directions for sealing seams or checking for leaks. Seam sealer is included with many new tents. Fabrics and threads often require sealant to ensure weather-tightnesWatch for mildew Never put a tent away wet. If it is necessary to pack up after a rain, set up the tent as soon as you get home and allow it to dry thoroughly. Mildew can set in within 24 hours (unless you have chosen a tent of the new mildew-proo- f Evolution III material). Contrary to what some people say, nylon tents as well as cotton or polyester tents can mildew. Store tents in a dry place. Marine photography is a snap Photographers and would-b- e photographers can have fun right along with the boaters, skiers and swimmers in the family this summer. Dont let the fear of getting your camera wet keep you from taking some great pictures. Here are some tips from Starcraft Marine on how to begin: Pack your camera (with neck k strap) and film supply in a in it a and bag plastic place styrofoam cooler. This keeps your equipment dry and protected from the heat until youre ready to use it. Because of the confined nature of a boat, its a good idea to use a wide-angl- e lens if you have one. Its very convenient to take pictures from an open-boboat such as Starcrafts CSS 160 B. Youre able to move freely and easily from bow to windstern through the shield, and the padded, upholstered sides and seats provide comfort while youre shooting. Using lens filters helps, but is not necessary. If you do use one, a polarizing filter is best. It gives you more control over reflections (glare), making colors look richer. While most boating activities are done in very good light, the best light for marine photography is early morning or early evening. If you want re zip-loc- walk-throug- h flections, go early in the morning when the water is most tranquil; this will enhance the beauty of the boating scene. Since there is plenty of light, dont film with be afraid to use slower-spee- d an ASA of 25 or 64. This type of film tends to have great color resolution e and is known for rich, colors. Use a minimum shutter speed of one over the length of your lens. For instance, if your lens is 50 mm, set the shutter speed at 60 (usually the nearest setting on most cameras), and adjust the aperture according to the light meter. Look for backgrounds; many scenes that never appear from land, such as a city skyline from the water, autumn foliage with water in the foreground and wildlife, can be breathtaking. If your camera has a lens opening of 2.8 or wider (1.8 or 1.4), you will n have no trouble freezing skiing shots provided the light is strong. The alternative is a film that stops the action. For clear, prints or slides, use highspeed film with an ASA of 400. Even film can be used, but as higher-speeyou increase the film speed, the grain of the film also increases. Your photos will not be as sharp or as suitable for enlargement. true-to-li(- Complete service & foreign car service. Custom-bui- lt foreign & engines domestic.
