Show Emery County Progress Wednesday, May 15, 1985 3A County museum gets funding By RUTH WARNER Staff writer Ann Wissler and the Allosaurus dinosaur, which is about 160 million years old, were on hand to welcome Emery County Chamber of Commerce members as they entered the Emery County Museum for the monthly meeting May 8. Mary Bentley, president of the chamber, called the meeting to order. She explained that the chamber had arranged through the Utah Job Service of Castle Dale and Green Thumb to hire an assistant for Mrs. Wissler at the museum. With the added help, she will be able to keep the museum open five days a week, Mrs. Bentley Weve also made said. arrangements with the Utah Department of Transportation to have a sign put out on Main Street to show visitors that the museum is located in the Castle Dale City Hall. The chamber president said that by doing this they will get $1,000 from the Utah Travel Council and have someone here to pass information pamphlets, and theyll have information and maps printed on place mats showing visitors the sites that Emery County has. In other matters, Spring Fling will be held on Saturday, June 8, with a parade starting at 10 a.m. Following will be numerous booths and games for visitors of all ages in the Castle Dale city park. The concessions will run continuously until 4 p.m. A lamb fry is planned to round off the day and renew the energy spent during the fun and games. Concluding the festive events will be a dance held Saturday evening. Mrs. Bentley then turned the meeting over to Mrs. Wissler, Emery County Museum director, who conducted a tour that took the members through 500 million years of life on earth. Starting with rocks containing fossilized shellfish that were swimming around in the great oceans and seas over 500 million years ago, she then told of the great animals that roamed the earth and showed the chamber members Allosaurus, a dinosaur that is 22 feet long which dominates the museums central hall, greeting visitors as they enter. The tour continued through the art gallery, where portraits of Indians and early Emery County pioneers are hung, to the two pioneer rooms where visitors may witness a time and way of life gone by. Finally, the depicting what made the early-da- y mercantile dry goods and grocery store the hub of any Emery County city during the 1800s concluded the tour. Museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and the facility is closed on Mondays. co-o- p Concert features Miss Emery Heidi Magleby, the reigning Miss Emery County, will be featured in concemt at the Emery County High School auditorium on June 1 at 8 p.m. Miss Magleby will be part of a variety program which also the features Provo band Souvenir, a soft rock group which has performed as a back- - Elmo man advances The staff of the Utah Military Utah National Academy, Guard, is pleased to announce the completion of advanced noncommissioned officer course, Class 41, on May 5, 1985, at the Camp Williams Officers Club. officer Noncommissioned courses at the academy are to prepare members of the Utah National Guard for greater leadership responsibilities and service in their home units.
