A year ago, Loralie and Leland Pearson built and stocked the redwood greenhouse attached to their home at a cost of $10,000. The annex features five 9 feet by 4 feet glass windows, and four skylights and a fan. The skylights control the entry of sunrays from the top. The temperature must be regulated; not too hot and not too cold for the delicate orchids and other tropical plants sharing attention with rows of house plants, including the therapeutic aloe vera. Rub the cut leaf of that plant on a burn for prompt relief. Loralie's grandmother used to advocate the use of certain herbs and plants for medicinal uses but she never passed on her information before death. Last winter the temperature dipped to 40 degrees. Tropical plants must be kept above 55 degrees. A ceiling hung gas furnace keeps the palms, ferns, orchids, poinsettias and large assortment of other house plants comfortable on cloudy days and cool nights. The air circulating from the greenhouse in through sliding doors into the home aids the heating and will be improved by an overall roof equipped with heat ducts. The greenhouse location allows the young mother to run a business, and care for the children, Kari, 6; Adrienne, 5; Sarah Marie, 19 months; and Benjamin, 5 weeks. Benjamin was named and blessed Sunday. Loralie was born to Ray and Dorothy Sorenson Cox at Manti Nov. 14, 1953. She grew up in Manti and attended Dixie College for two years, concentrating on interior design. During two subsequent years at USU, she switched courses for ones more compatible to small She studied horticulture, plant science and soil analysis, basic pruning, botany and related subjects. Searching for plant specimens over the terrain afforded a compelling experience. She completed a vocational course in grooming and nursery stock and took employment at Salt Lake City greenhouses. She learned how to make floral town In the along with nurturing many types of plants, and she met Leland at Utah Roses. He was on a maintenance crew and lived nearby.
