Recent studies of the FDA have shown that there are possible links to birth defects with the consumption of caffeine, hence their caution to pregnant women to avoid caffeine. If youve decided to cut back on your caffeine intake for one reason or another you may or may not find that task simple. For example, a pregnant woman who is avoiding coffee and tea, might be surprised to learn that a single dose of for a headache will supply as much caffeine as two cups of regular instant coffee, says Consumer Reports. You may expect to find caffeine in colas, and food science literature suggests that top sellers such as Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola will score high in caffeine. They didnt. Their caffeine content was near the lower end of the scale for caffeinated soft drinks. So how do you cut back on the consumption of caffeine? One sure way to cut back is to avoid all likely sources of caffeine. Here are a few options: Coffee The amount of caffeine in coffee depends on a number of factors: how its brewed, how long its brewed, and whether or not its regular or instant. For example, the drip type method produces a heavier concentrate of caffeine than the percolator type. And regular coffee is higher than instant in caffeine content. Of course the decaffeinated nrands of coffee contain less than the regular type. Tea Tea varies widely in its caffeine content depending on the type of tea leaves and how long you brew it. The longer you brew, the more caffeine. There are decaffeinated teas available. Soda Pop Ex-cedr- in Generally speaking, ginger ales, club soda, tonic water, root beers and most fruit - flavored drinks contain no caffeine. If it is added they must list it on the label. Be sure and read your labels. Cola beverages commonly contain caffeine. Below is a list of the top selling brands and their caffeine content in milligrams: Diet Mr. Pibb, 52; Mountain Dew, 52; Mello Yello, 51; Tab, 44; Shasta Cola, 42; Dr. Pepper, 38; Diet Dr. Pepper, 37; Pepsi - Cola, 37; Royal Crown Cola, 36; Diet Rite Cola, 34; Diet Pepsi, 34; Coca - Cola, 34; Mr. Pibb, 33; Cragmont Cola, trace. Sprite, Diet Sunkist Orange (in Utah only) Patio Orange, Fanta Orange, Fresca, and Hires Root Beer all contain no caffeine. Chocolate Drinks The cocoa bean, like the coffee bean, also contains caffeine. Consumer Reports tested various brands of chocolate drink mixes and found that tht 'affein content -- p, p, RC-10- 0, ranged from one to 20 milligrams per serving, the average being 10 milligrams. In comparison, a cup of percolated coffee (five ounces) is about 110 milligrams. Foods Except for chocolate, food is considered a negligible source of caffeine. According to the FDA, milk chocolate contains about six milligrams of caffeine per ounce, and baking chocolate about 35 milligrams per ounce. f Drugs Many over - the - counter drug products contain caffeine. Those sold as stimulants (NoDoz) contain a significant supply of caffeine. But many products intended for other uses such as products for pain relief, weight control and weight loss contain large doses of caffeine. Similar products are available without caffeine, so again be sure to check the labels. If youre wanting to cut down on your caffeine intake, it is possible, and made much easier by making informed choices. The similarity of the two types of headaches are that they may be reoccurring and they may be influenced by emotional and psychological factors. However, the migraine headache is often genetically determined in the family. The migraine headache ranges from a mild discomfort that is easily tolerated and controlled by aspirin to a more severe incapacitating, excruciating or debilitating type of headache. The diagnosis of a migraine headache is based upon the characteristic manifestation of the headache and the sequence of the manifestations that may occur from patient to patient. There is a classical form of the headache that makes diagnosis easy but because of the wide variability it may be a difficult diagnosis. The manifestations of a migraine attack usually begin with a constriction of the arteries surrounding the head. In severe cases the constriction is sufficient to cause visual impairment, paralysis on one side of the body and loss of consciousness. The second stage of the migraine attack is a dialation of the blood vessels. This dialation phase is the painful phase of the migraine. The pain may be expressed most commonly on one side of the head but it may occur on both sides and it may localize behind the eye, ear, neck, face or in some combination of these areas. The pain is frequently described as a pounding and throbbing. Sudden movements of the head, bending over, caughing, sneezing, or nausea and vomiting commonly occur. This type of headache is often triggered by emotional stress, anxiety, apprehension, worry, concern, anger, hostility and depression. The emotional stress triggers the constriction and then dilation of the blood vessels which initiates the headaches. The diagnosis of migraine headaches is made by a clear understanding and description of the manifestations of the disease. A detailed history and physical examination are usually sufficient to make the appropriate diagnosis. of the Because many manifestations of severe migraine may be seen in individuals who have other diseases of a stroke. Bleeding or tumors of the brain are other possibilities. Management of the patient with migraine headaches is often very difficult. Early recognition of the first signs of an impending headache is an important part of the management. "Various drugs are available such as; Cafergot (R) and Ergot preparations which can help reduce the severity of the headache. These drugs act in a direct way on the swollen blood vessels to bring them back to a normal size. If the headache is allowed to proceed, the severe pain stage, then often narcotics and sedatives are needed to provide comfort to the patient. Because the problem is often caused by emotional stress, patients often fail to recognize the early sign of the disease and then suffer through the severe painful phase. Allowing themselves to have a severe headache may be one way that they are able to cope with this problem or to receive sympathy from other family members. In an attempt to prevent migraine headaches in patients with chronic and reoccurring problems there are some preventive factors which may be helpful. Certainly reduction of the stressful environment and learning how to cope and manage individual stress may be very important. Often psychotherapy or biofeedback training may be helpful with this disorder. Such things as obtaining an adequate nights sleep, reducing the amount of stress in ones daily routine, keeping a reasonable limitation on ? commitments and responsibilities, relaxed weekends, and regular vacations may all be important factors in helping the migraine victims to reduce their problem and to live with a rather unpleasant disorder. There are very few medications available which seem to be effective in preventing the onset of these attacks. Several of them are related to the Ergot preparations used to treat heart and other blood vessel problems have been found to be effective in preventing the swelling of the arteries during the migraine attack. Propranolol is the drug most frequently used. Some patients may require an- tidepressant tranquilizers problem. drugs and to help reduce the Next week : Ouster Headaches. Dr. Kotrady |
