Show 1962 IN REVIEW- A chronology of main happenings happen-ings in Bingham Canyon and West Jordan and surrounding areas during the first ten months of 1962. JANUARY 5 A new Day-Nite Coin Operated Dry Cleaning Center opened at 7658 So. Redwood Road in West Jordan this week. The New March of Dimes opened open-ed its 1962 campaign in Utah on January 2nd. Cene Fullmer NBA middleweight boxing champion was among those to be honored last Friday night at the Los Anpeles Times National Sports Awards banquet at Los Angeles. An-geles. He was named "Fighter of the Year" by the Times, and has also been chosen "Fighter of the Year" by the Boxing Writers Assn. Further honor was bestowed on the West Jordan fighter this week when he was presented the special athletic award given by the Y. M.M.I. M.-M.I. A. Athletic Committee. Miss Ann Marie Wagstaff and Cordon L. Croom, both of West Jordan were married in a - home ceremony Dec. 27, 1961.. Mike Berela and Verlaine Bills were married Dec. 22, 1961 in Elko, Nevada. JANUARY 12 Mayor Peter C. Dimas and Coun-cilmen Coun-cilmen Mrs. Evelyn Fontana, first councilwoman in the city's history, and Cail Farnsworth, who were ellected in the November municipal election, were sworn into office at the first meeting of the Bingham City Council of the new year Wednesday Wed-nesday night. W. W. Raby was appointed ap-pointed to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Dimas on the council. Newly elected officials of the West Jordan Town Board taking oaths of office the beginning of the year to begin terms of office for four years were: Royal Spratling, board president; Arden B. Tesch and Richard Westwood, trustees. Negotiations for sale to Kenne-cott Kenne-cott Copper Corporation of Bingham Bing-ham Central Elementary School and a house on the school grounds were opened by the Jordan School District Dis-trict Board of Education and the corporation. A Solemn Novena will be held in St. Paschal's Church, Lark, Jan. 14-22, with Father John AuBuch-on, AuBuch-on, C. Cs. R., as director of the Novena exercises. Adolph E. Trujillo, 59, of Mid-vale, Mid-vale, formerly of Bingham Canyon, passed away January 6 in a Salt Lake hospital of natural causes. Staff of the Bingham Hi-Lights, Bingham High's school paper, was awarded a first place citation from Quill and Scroll magazine for their observance of National Newspaper Week. JANUARY 19 Alma Lee Irving, 76, of West Jordan, passed away in a Salt Lake ospital of natural causes Jan. 17. Mrs. Stella Irene Coff Lipsey, 67, of Sandy, formerly of Bingham Canyon, passed away Jan. 1 4 in a Salt Lake hospital of natural causes. The best safety record of its history was established in 1961 by the Utah Copper Division of Ken-necott Ken-necott Copper Corp. The division had 25 lost-time injuries in an estimated esti-mated 13,332,455 man-hours work ed during the year. The disabling injury frequency rate is estimated at 1.88 disabling injuries for every million manhour. Tho National Safety Council's Award of Merit was given to the entire division four times and to the mine twice for working in excess of one million mil-lion manhours without a disabling injury. The division, smelter, refinery, re-finery, and Arthur ore concentrator concentra-tor all set new records for man-hours man-hours worked without disabling injury. in-jury. New officers of the West Jordan Chamber of Commerce for 1962 are: Rulon Miller, president; Kenneth Ken-neth Cook, vice president, and Rod Chapman, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Anna Clark McConnell, 87, former longtime Bingham resident, passed away Feb. I 7 in a Salt Lake rest home of natural causes. She had been a resident of-Bingham Canyon for 60 years. Sam Pino, 69, of Midvale, former form-er Copperton resident, died at his home of a heart ailment Feb. 19. Preliminary sketches for a now elementary school to be located at 925 E. 10400 So. were approved by the Jordan District Board of Education. Miss Twila Webster and Gail Wood, both of West Jordan, exchanged ex-changed wedding vows Jan. 26 at the West Jordan Stake Mouse. Cloyd G. Harrison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald A. Harrison 'of West Jordan, was honored with a missionary farewell at West Jordan 3rd Ward on Jan. 21 prior to his departure for the Northern States Mission. FEBRUARY 2 John H. Gressmen, 59, of Lark, passed away Jan. 30 in a Salt Lake Expressing the happy spirit of the Holiday season, hostess Jane Wyatt will read some famous Christmas stories on the Bell Telephone Hour's Christmas special over NBC-TV on Sunday, December 23, Channel 2. Other stars on this beautiful program are singers Florence Henderson, Earl Wrightson and Mildred Miller, dancers Roberta Lubell and Michael Maule and the Roger Wagner Chorale. The annual senior banquet and pin ceremony of the Copperton LDS Seminary was held at the West Jordan Stake House the evening of March 24. Mrs. Richard C. Stevenson and Mrs. Richard G. Steele of the Bingham Bing-ham Canyon Women's Civic Club were elected to offices of the Central Cen-tral District of Utah Federation of Women's Clubs during their annual convention at Tooele March 24th. Alvin Eugene (Kinky) Miller, 74, of Copperton passed away March 27 of a lingering illness. Dr. H. C. Jenkins, formerly associated as-sociated with Utah Copper Hospital Hos-pital at Bingham Canyon for many years, announced opening of his new office in the Boggess Medical-Dental Medical-Dental Building at 115 East 4600 South in Murray. MARCH 9 Bingham High School's basketball basket-ball team finished the regular season sea-son of play in second place in regional re-gional standings and claimed a berth in the state Class A Tourney starting March 13. Donald Creer, 58, of Murray, a former practicing attorney and also a former city attorney of Bingham Bing-ham Canyon, died March 5 of injuries in-juries suffered in a auto accident near Farr.tington Feb. 19. High school boundary lines were redrawn in Jordan School District in preparation for opening of the new Hillcreat High School next fall. Jordan Builders Supply, Inc., of West Jordan waa awarded the contract con-tract for conatruction of the new poat office at West Jordan. Under the Poat Office Department's leaae conatruction program the Jordan Buildera Supply will construct the new building at 1800 W. 7800 So., and rent it to the department. The smelter has worked an estimated esti-mated 2,435,795 manhours without with-out lost time accident. APRIL 13 Construction of the new post office at Bingham Canyon waa further fur-ther advanced with announcement that a contract has been awarded to Clayton F. Anderson, West Jordan, Jor-dan, to build and rent the building to the Post Office Department.
