Show m FARM, RANCH Bugs cause brown spots Those unsightly brown spots in the lawn, are they due to a lack of water or fertilizer? Are they due to some fungus disease or are they the results of the nightly visits by the neighbors dog? Did they occur because junior spilled gasoline on the lawn when he filled the power mower last week? ; These are only a few of the questions a Carbon Emery county homeowner might be asking himself as he spends another evening -- watering the lawn and - wondering why his lawn isnt as pretty and green as his neighbors. Well, in case the brown spots are due to insects, it may be time to counter attack. In northern Utah, white grubs, bluegrass billbugs and sod webworms are frequent pests of lawns. Other insects and small animals such as ants, centipedes, armyworms, clover mites, cutworms, earthworms, earwigs, millipedes, leafhoppers, pillbugs, spiders, sowbugs and wireworms may also be found in lawns. Many of these are not injurious and those which are, usually only occur periodically. In the case of lawn pests, it pays to know your enemy. The bluegrass billbug is really not a bug, it is a beetle. The adults are small, grayish black beetles with a distinct snout, and that is where they get their name. The larvae are rather small, short, stubby, grubs that live in the grass and feed on the grass leaves, stems and roots. To find them, cut out a small square section of dying lawn with a square-- : nosed shovel and carefully cream-colore- ' - d examine tne root area for the grubs. The presence of stubby little grubs about V2 inch long is a pretty good indication that you have an infestation of cream-colore- d billbugs. The section of lawn removed by the shovel can then be replaced. The sod webworms are the larvae of the well known lawn moths. The adult female lawn moths are often observed flying in a zig zag pattern over lawns on warm summer evenings while dropping their eggs into the grass. The larvae, or sod webworms, are small, not so fat, dirty worms about V2 to a4 inch white-colore- d long. They are usually found in the thatch, that part of the lawn where the cut grass blades have accumulated above the roots of the grass. Sometimes you can find them, or their green colored pellets by just parting the grass in the dying areas with your fingers. White grubs are the larvae of the well known June beetles. These beetles are also called May beetles in some parts of the country. The rather large, rust-colore- d adults are often noticed on warm summer nights when they fly to lights and are often atto backdoor tracted screens. The larvae, or white grubs, are large, white colored, stocky worms with brown heads, and 3 pair of distinct legs. The larvae assume a U very characteristic position in the soil. They may be found by digging up a small square of grass shovel with a square-nose- d and examining the roots GarcknMatler 8. 3 HORSEPOWER Farm 20 IN.
