Anderson followed Larsen in the clerk position and shortly afterwards the first went out of business. The history of the present Castle Dale begins with the merco-o- p Co-o- p cantile venture of James and Annie Petersen. The Petersens opened their first store in their new home in the north part of town (the present Victor Price home). It could well be said the Petersen children were almost raised in a store, for their parents started ordering goods for their neighbors in their earliest home. Annie, trying to be helpful, would order extra lace, pins, thread and other items whenever she sent for a small order from a mail order house. For years she kept small supply of notions in a cloth cupboard that had been given her by her stepfather as a wedding present. As time went on, business grew and was transferred to shelves in the parlor of the family home, then later to a frame building on the front of their lot. Soon there was a need for a bigger and better store and Mr. Petersen made a trade of a team of horses and a wagon for a location on Main Street for a lot and cabin owned by Andrew and Carolyn Christensen. The cabin was removed and James and his boys Delbert, Parley, Leo, Vern and Rex built a fine new' brick building two-stor- y there around That is the 1900. building which now houses the Castle Dale The western part of the store was to have been a furniture store, but for some reason never was. It was Co-o- p. walled off by bricks from the other part of the store and was used mainly for storage. The upstairs was used as a public dance hall. Older residents of Castle Dale will remember the happy times had there. The stairs to the top were at the rear of the store. There was no access of the Joe. one of these men, One-ey- e Joe was said to have broken his leg and came to Annie Petersen to take care of it. He knew of her compassion for the needy and sought her out for help. Alter his leg was well, he gave her $5, which in those days was a goodly sum. With this money she was able to start her store, which eventually became the buiding which now houses the Castle Dale second floor from inside the building. The store was to be called the A Progress of Dec. wagon draw'n by one span of horses and one span of mules. During the time that Petersen owned the store, money was scarce as a medium of exchange, so the store issued some aluminum coins in various denominations. They came in different shapes according to how much they were worth, and on one side read Good for (the amount) in merchandise at retail. On the other side it said Jas. Petersen, Castle Dale, Utah. Present day residents and visitors see Emery Countys towns as drab and static. But through these quiet hills once rode outlaws as notorious as the wild west ever knew Butch Cassidy, Eliza Lay, Cassidys Robbers Roost gang and co-o- p Their trail followed the long and lonely route from the in Wyoming, down through Lost Cabin, Powder Springs, Browns Park and the Uinta Basin to Castle Valley and the San Rafael in Emery County, then to the Robbers Roost in the eastern end of Wayne County.
