The hottest Fishing of the year occurs now, during the transition period between winter and spring. As the ice begins to recede (typically in the last week or two of April), the fish move to shore where food is more abundant. The trout have awakened from a deep winter sleep and are very aggressive willing to attack a fly, lure or bait. My favorite technique is to drop a green bugger or nymph pattern off the edge of the ice to the bottom and retrieve it very slowly. The same method is effective for most lures. The traditional worm and marshmallow combination does well, fished just off the bottom. Float tubers can have great success fishing parallel to the ice edge or farther from shore, avoiding the crowds that undoubtedly form once word gets out about the excellent Ashing. Excellent fishing generally continues for approximately one As the weather month after and water continue to warm, trout gradually work their way out to deeper and cooler water. Shore anglers begin to see a reduction in success while fishermen in float tubes and boats continue to catch good numbers of fish. A reduction in the trout limit from 8 to 4 in 1999 has provided more consistent fishing throughout the year Another apparent benefit of the reduced limit is the carryover of larger rainbow and cutthroat trout. In addition to the limit, release of trout, particuice-ou- t. population, which is increasing in numbers and size and provides excellent fishing opportunities. These contacts provide Division personnel with the opportunity to collect biological data and monitor compliance.
