If you fail to do so judgment by default will be taken against you for the relief demanded in said Verified Complaint which has teen filed with the Clerk of the above-entitle- d Court and a copy of which is hereto an- - Archery deer hunt should be good this year Archers afield for the opening of Utahs general archery buck deer hunt Aug. 19 can expect more deer but they may have to after their hunting strategies to deal with the dry conditions. Utah has enjoyed mild winters every year since a severe winter in 1993 - 1994 severely reduced many of the states herds. Deer numbers are as high as theyve been since 1993," said Steve Flinders, big game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Archers pursuing those deer should find less competition, as a draw system started this year will help assure that hunting permits will not oversell. Since Utah went to a 97,000 hunter cap in 1994, permits for many of the Divisions five regions have oversold almost every year. Flinders says archers heading out Aug. 19 should look to the high country for deer. The hot, dry summer has forced them high, where cooler temperatures and the best vegetation are found. They will be found mostly around watering sources and probably wont be very active during the heat of the day, he said. Flinders said one of the many bright spots in the state this season is the Northeastern Region, especially the Current Creek area. Deer production has been good in the region the past two years. Hunters who drew a coveted Southern Region tag should also find plenty of bucks. The number of bucks remaining in the region after last years hunting seasons averaged 20 bucks per 100 does. There are some areas of the state where deer continue to struggle. Because of chronically low buck to doe ratios, the archery hunt will be only five days on the La Sal and Abajo Mountains units in southeast Utah. And while deer numbers on the Cache Unit in northern Utah have increased from last year, theyve havent rebounded from the winter of 1992 1993 like they once did. While things are looking up for deer populations right now, Flinders has some concerns about the affects a hard winter could have on deer this year Deer could enter winter in poor conditions condition because of drought-lik- e across much of the state. Resident permits for the Central, Southeastern and Southern regions have sold out. Flinders reminds archers to be extremely careful with fires this year. The number of deer in hunting units in the Divisions Southeastern Region are generally below herd objectives, reports Brent Stettler, the regions conservation outreach manager. The herd unit closest to objective is the San Rafael, which occurs mostly on private, agricultural land," Stettler said. The Manti, which provides the bulk of hunting opportunity in the region, is at 63 percent of objective." Buck to doe ratios offer a little more encouragement, with some general season units above objective. The units with the lowest buck to doe ratios after last seasons hunts were the La Sals and Abajo mountains. All deer herds in the Southeastern Region have suffered from a decade of inadequate moisture and low fawn survival," Stettler said. This year, sportsmen can expect to find fair to modest numbers of deer on the Manti unit. Hunting on Range Creek is expected to be fair. Fair hunting is also anticipated in the La Sal and Abajo mountains. Since deer occur almost exclusively on private agricultural land on the San Rafael unit, prospective hunters should get written permission before deciding to hunt there. Hunters in the southmost part of the region -- are reminded that archery, rifle and muzzleloader hunts have been reduced to five day seasons. Bill Bates, Southeastern Region wildlife manager, recommends that hunters do a lot of scouting this year. Archers should focus their efforts around water sources. , Because vegetation is so dry and noisy, effective stalking will be extremely difficult," Bates said. This is probably a good year to invest in a blind or tree stand." Big bucks are expected to be away from roads, in inaccessible and remote locations. pre-hu- nt nexed and herewith served upon you.
